Tobias followed along with Jack without questioning the man. His father wouldn't have approved if he'd known, of course, but Tobias hoped he wasn't so quick to hunt them down. So far, so good.
Of course, he was itching for a chance to shoot up. As much as he wanted to see Rose and help Jack, spending his time with the warden prevented him from introducing dilaudid into his veins. He'd not even thought to bring a syringe with him, assuming that they'd be back on the Barge soon enough and not spending days in "town" or heading into the creepy looking forest. How wrong he had been.
"...let's go back to the Barge," He insisted finally when it became clear that Jack wanted to go explore the woods.
"What? Why?" Jack asked, stopping to frown at Tobias as another villager pointed them towards the woods. Jack kind of appreciated the fairytale storylines that shaped this place, because hell, it was making their quest easier. The forest was definitely was their best hope for finding the others. He was all ready to head into the trees, much as they did look kind of creepy, so Tobias' protest was a little annoying. "We need to find Harvey. And Rose."
He was trying not to think about all the things that were likely to happen in the forest. Big bad wolves, bands of outlaws, magic... Who knew?
He rolled his eyes at Tobias, turned towards the woods, and continued irritably, "Come on."
Tobias dragged his heels. "I want to go back. Please. If Rose is in the woods, how are we supposed to find her?"
As far as he could tell, the forest was large and ominous; what if the Barge left while they were searching? What if Rose wasn't even there? Tobias didn't care about Harvey, much less really know who he was. He only wanted to see his warden and get back to his room and drugs.
"What if Rose is on the Barge? Maybe we should look there..."
"We'll find her. The way I figure it, this whole place is a fairytale, right?" he said, holding up a hand and pausing to look back at Tobias. He sounded more confident than he really felt, but hey. "So, we're being pointed towards the forest, and obviously, when we go in, we'll find them. That's the way things work in these stories."
Jack just wanted to get into the forest, because, truth be known, the thought of it really was freaking him out a little bit. He knew they had to go in, and the sooner the better in his opinion.
"If Rose is on the Barge, we'll get back to her after wandering in the woods for a bit," Jack said, again, sounding more confident than he felt. "And I do need to look for Harvey. He's my inmate, Tobias."
"Maybe he's on the Barge too," Tobias offered. "It'd be better if we went back to look. Please, let's look first before we go into the woods."
He paused, then added, "What is he's already dead? If he's dead, there's nothing we can do. And my father is probably getting angry and wondering where I am, so I should tell him. We need to go back, Jack..."
"If he was on the Barge-" Jack said, his voice tinged with more annoyed exasperation this time. "-he'd have replied to my journal entry." He paused and when he continued, he sounded a little sheepish, "And plus, I just have this feeling that he's in there... It sounds stupid, but- I don't know, I guess it could be a... magic thing."
At the mention of Tobias's father, Jack had rolled his eyes, again, but he decided not to say anything about it. He didn't want to get into that again, not right now. Charles would be of less help than Tobias would. Jack didn't want him showing up.
"Come on," he said again, more forcefully. He started making a move towards the trees. "I'm going. Go back to the Barge if you want to. Explain to the Admiral why you didn't look for your warden when you thought she might have been missing. Didn't he say that any warden and inmate pairs that don't come back complete both get left behind?"
"You don't know that!" Tobias nearly snapped. "Maybe he doesn't want to talk to you! Maybe he wants you to go into the woods and die so he doesn't get blamed! What if that's his plan?" Of course, Tobias didn't really know Harvey, so he didn't know how close or far from the truth that statement was. He just knew he didn't want to go into the woods.
The second comment worried him, however. "What?" He hadn't heard that. If he didn't find Rose, he was going to be left behind? Was that what Jack meant? But where was Rose? Why would she leave? Why would she do that to him. He whimpered. "What do you mean? Why did he say that?"
"Yeah, not every inmate hates their warden, man," Jack retorted, frowning. Harvey hadn't seemed upset with him when they'd last spoken through the journals. He'd sounded happy to stick with Jack for the port. No, he wouldn't have done that. Jack was pretty sure, anyway... Voice more certain than he was, he insisted, "That's not something he'd do."
Jack walked slowly towards the forest, spitting the words back over his shoulder at the inmate: "I don't know why. Christ. But he did say it. You've got to look for her, Tobias, or you'll be stuck here forever." He stopped walking and turned back to face Tobias. "Write her a journal entry if you want, but I bet she won't reply. She's out there somewhere."
Tobias trailed behind nervously, like a puppy. "But-but I haven't spoken to her for awhile! Maybe she wouldn't respond anyway. Maybe she wants me to die so she can be free to go..." He didn't want to say it, so he swallowed and said, "...do those things with those sorts of people."
He didn't know what to do, though. If Rose WAS setting him up, there was no way he would find her and then what? Would he be left behind? He didn't want to be left behind. He wanted to go home. He furrowed his brow and ran a hand through his hair. It wasn't fair!
"Do you really think she'd want you to die, man?" Jack asked. It was mainly a rhetorical question. Even Tobias couldn't really think that Rose would want that. She may not have always made the best choices with him, but she didn't hate him or anything. "Come on, that's just stupid. And plus, if she left you here, she'd be stuck as well. It works both ways..."
He paused. Tobias had made references to Rose doing stuff with certain people before, too, after the last flood. It was probably something to do with what had happened in that flood. His eyebrows drew down, and he finally asked, "What sorts of people? What things?"
"I-I don't know...maybe. I don't know what Rose thinks." He used to think that maybe he did, just a little bit. Now he wasn't so sure. Jack asked him to be more specific and Tobias didn't really know how to say it. "She...she said she was addicted to..."
No, he couldn't. Yes, he could. He had to. Maybe Jack could do something about it. But those were the sorts of things he was supposed to talk about...
"She said she...did sexual things to...men who...like men." Sex was a subject Tobias tried to keep his thoughts far away from. Years of his father driving in the notion that it was a sin for the most part tended to cause Tobias uncomfort if his mind wandered too far down that path.
"She said she did what?" Jack's voice was a tone of complete disbelief. He stopped short and looked at Tobias. Rose had said she- That was ridiculous. Sex made Jack uncomfortable too, to be honest. Tyler screwed Marla with his body and he hadn't been able to think about sex the same way...
"I don't-" He really wasn't sure what to say. That had definitely not what he'd been expecting. He shook his head. "She can't have meant- Did she really say that?"
"She said that. She said that after she called my mom a whore and said she knew someone who had seen her recently. She told me before that she didn't know how to find my mom. She's a liar and a sinner!"
He covered his face and crouched down, sobbing. He wanted his drugs, he wanted his safe little room, and he wanted to be alone, without his father, or wardens, or Rose, or...
"She really said it," He insisted. "She really said it...."
"We were flooded," Jack said, trying to think rationally and not think about what Tobias had actually said. He didn't want to believe that it was true. It had been a weird flood. There must be a logical normal explanation...
"Tobias, it was the flood. It had to be. Everyone was different, man. She must have been..." He waved a hand, not sure how else to say it. He crouched down next to the other man. Tobias had to keep in control. Jack really didn't want to see his father or the angel. "If we find her, you can talk to her and she can explain. It must have been the flood."
Tobias looked at Jack. "But what if it's the truth? What if the flood made her tell the truth?" That would mean she really did think his mom was a whore and do those things with homosexuals. Then again, that would mean everything Jack and Angel said was true too...
He didn't want to think about it.
"I don't want to talk to her. I don't want to hear anymore about it!"
"It wasn't a truth flood, Tobias, trust me. It was... I don't know what it was. It was something else. It didn't make you tell the truth," Jack said, thinking back to the last flood. Tyler had been in control the whole time. Jack hadn't even been in the back of his head, though, later he knew what Tyler had been doing. It still worked like it always did. But Tyler hadn't been acting differently than usual, so what could the flood have been?
He shook his head and stood up. "It must have been the flood. It must have done something that made her say that stuff..." He paused, then continued, "Look, if you just talk to her- It'll be okay. Come on. Trust me."
