Every so often I get it into my head that I'm going to try to kill all the promotional mailings that I get delivered to my house. I save fliers and such, and when I get around to it, I search them for instructions for opting out of future mailings. I've managed to kill a couple of the most annoying ones (I'm looking at you Value-Pak, and that "newspaper" of all ads that would arrive every couple of days). Now its mostly offers from companies that I've bought something from already. Bed Bath & Beyond, Circuit City... and urgh, my cable company sends me crap like every other day: "Open this right away! Its totally a bill or something important. JUST KIDDING! You should sign up for HD cable!"
