i still want a house with skylights someday. superman wallpaper would be an added bonus but not necessary. i saw an encyclopedia brown book at the used bookstore today and had to restrain myself from getting it. i got a job that isn't camp or workstudy for the first time ever. and the best part -- i'll be walking around in the woods all summer. well, for most of it. this morning before class i went into my advisor's intro bio lab to tell her that i got the internship and she said "i knew you had it when they were talking to me on the phone yesterday. they asked how you'd do with tedious work and i told them, 'she'll be fine with anything as long as she's outside.'" so very true. traveling with a student (maybe grad student?) from umass and sometimes the main researcher to 114 different hemlock stands across CT and MA and assessing for the presence of an invasive beetle (the hemlock woolly adelgid) and doing brief forest health surveys. i'll be based out of petersham, ma but will also be spending 3-day stretches staying down in CT. note to self: learn to drive a stick before may 31st.
starting to learn swahili. much harder than spanish ever was. but going to be awesome. starting to get really psyched about that too. seems like things are suddenly seeming to fall into place for the future for once. a very nice change from everything being up the air for so long. also starting to realize how big a deal this is. thinking about all the things i need to do/learn/get before september 9. and it's starting to feel like a much more real thing. it's crazy.
kim and i might be living in an apartment up north next spring when we get back instead of in a double south, which would be awesome. oh, and we'd be living with boys too, which will be a change of pace. they're trying for a 4-person new ap (2 double rooms), and as all juniors have a decent chance at it. so if they get it the two girls'll be going abroad in the spring and kim and i'll move in to their double and live with geoff (who's from louisiana and lived on our hall last year) and bob (who i just met today). would be solid i think. and if melissa ends up living in watson, then she'll be decently close and can come chill with us. and who knows where colin and marc'll end up, but that'll work out (hopefully they're north), and ryan'll be back <3, and hopefully will'll find an apartment or somewhere else north to move in when he comes back in the spring.......
newman day's tomorrow. such college students. there'll be none of that for me because 1) i have six hours of class on wednesdays, 2) i would be dead if i actually made it anywhere near that far. kenyon administration's freaking out because of bad press and potential bad safety issues. they mailed us a letter from paul newman telling us not to do it because it's not only a really stupid idea but also isn't at all what he's ever advocated and he encouraged "twenty-three hours of community service followed by a cold one" over "twenty four beers in a case. twenty four hours in a day. coincidence? i think not." understandably so. probably going to be decently crazy tomorrow anyway. guess we'll see.
well that was much longer than anticipated, as seems to often be the case. hope all's well. take care.
