[TR] Hurricane

The wind had been picking up all day and the rains were steady but there was something about this rainstorm that just didn't seem the normal sort, not at all. It was subtle, but the winds were coming off the sea and the water was choppier than it should have been for just a normal afternoon storm. It didn't sit right with her, especially since ( Read more... )

By the time Will got home, there were rumors of a storm being visible from the beach--not just any storm, but a hurricane-level storm. Will wasn't about to wander down to the beach to find out, though; he'd take other people's word on that account. It was time for him and Magnus to get the hell out of their hut and head for the compound or one of the other places on the island that were being tossed out as shelter locations.

"Magnus?" he called, shedding his rain gear at the door and closing it with some difficulty. "There's a hurricane on the way. We need to get out of here, right now." God, he was soaked. No point in changing clothes if they were just going to head back out in it in a few minutes.

Ah. So she'd been right about it not being a bog-standard storm but that didn't ease her nerves any, not at all. Every little bit of life they'd cobbled together in this place was sitting inside the hut and now she was leaving it. Helen wasn't the type to abandon her home but in this case, she supposed, it was necessary.

She stood on shaky legs and tried to find her rain gear, giving Will a weak smile.

"Did I ever tell you I almost died in a storm like this once? I was just a teenager. Well before anything extraordinary had ever happened to me. I very nearly drowned in the sea off Dover. Never liked storms after that, not the sort with wind."

He'd been around Magnus long enough now that the shaky knees and not very genuine smile were a dead giveway, and he touched her shoulder reassuringly. "It's miles off shore, still," he told her. "We'll be at the compound long before that. Right now it's just rain and wind."

"Right, right," Helen said with a nod, tearing through the hut on an infuriating search for her rain gear. She wasn't normally so messy, or out of sorts, and she was thankful that at least Will was the one to see this and not anyone else. She hated seeming weak.

"Will? Where's my gear? I have a mental block, I think."
