all of her history etched out at her feet

Helen, frankly, was tired of having the emotions of a teenage girl and suspected that somehow she and Coraline had simply switched for the month. It was all John, mostly, with a bit of Nikola, and a whole lot of Will thrown in for good measure. There was Kate and her desire to make sure the island's girls were all safe and then there was the fact ( Read more... )

"I thought you liked ridiculously high heels," Will teased, pushing back the hem of her dress so he could get to her feet. These clothes were driving him nuts, seriously, with the layers and the buttons and the... the everything, but he couldn't deny Magnus looked good in them.

"I don't normally wear them on the island, though. Too much sand."

Truthfully, it'd been a long while since she wore heels on a daily basis and her body had grown used to flats and flip-flops.

"I'm sorry you've been having to get a crash course in dressing Victorian women. I wish James was here. I...don't think it'd be appropriate to ask Nikola or John to help me get dressed."

Oh hell no, it's not appropriate, he thought, making a face briefly before snorting a little. "Yeah, learning how to dress you has been such a chore," he teased as he worked on her foot. "Almost as much of a chorse as getting you out of it."

"Oh yes, I'm sure it's been a dreadful chore to get me out of all these layers."

Austen had curled up on Helen's lap and was comfortably kneading a spot to settle in the sea of taffeta.

"I don't remember having nearly this much sex the last time these fashions were in vogue. It must be the novelty of it for you, hmm?"

"Yep, dreadful." He pressed his thumbs into her heel at an angle he knew she liked. "Could be the clothes," he admitted, although he knew that was only part of it. He didn't need to analyze things very much to know that it was partly a my wife type of reaction to Druitt showing up. What. a. clusterfuck. "I especially like this dress. It's like you know that's my favorite color or something."

"Mmmm," Helen murmured, relaxing even more. "I do know your favorite color, darling. Might I ask you something? Everything's calmed down for the moment, it felt like a good time to talk."

Will slid his fingers up her ankle, rubbing in little circles as he worked his way back down her foot again. "Of course," he said. It was an abrupt change of topic, sure, but things were a little crazy right now and that was what happened. Life didn't make neat segues.

"Since we're married I thought it might be a good time to revisit the conversation regarding children. I likely can't have many fertile years left...I was in my mid thirties when I took the Source blood. If I picked up where I left off...it stands to reason I don't have much time."

That, and having another child would help stave down all the feelings about Ashley that John had stirred up in her again.

Will's hand stilled on her ankle while her words sank in. They'd talked about this once and Will had had reservations; now, he had a whole world of reservations, with her serial-killer-ex being at the top of the list, with his own issues about parents and kids right behind that. "Right," he said quietly. He moved his thumb back and forth along her ankle a little and then stopped.

He didn't think that Magnus's sense of How To Do Things In Life necessarily subscribed to the 1. Marriage, 2. Babies formula, so he suspected that her mention of marriage wasn't really why she was bringing this up now. "I know you feel like you're running out of time," he said carefully, "and that's not something you're used to feeling."

"It's important to me, Will. It's something I want with you, which you knew, and I'm...patience isn't a virtue of mine, no, but in this instance we really need to get a move on if I stand a chance of conceiving."

She busied herself with stroking the cat for a few moments before continuing. "I'm not young, Will."

Will bristled a little at get a move on, but he tried to hold it in. Magnus was under a lot of stress at the moment and it was important for him to be understanding of that. "I understand that," he said, and then waited a little before adding, very carefully, "Still, there's nothing that says we have to do this right now." He actually thought it was a pretty bad time, not just because of the island's unpredictability, but because Druitt was here and Will still wasn't convinced the man wasn't a danger to others, especially Magnus.

"Will, the earlier we start trying, the easier it will be on me to conceive and carry," Helen argued.

"It's different for you, you'll be able to father children as long as you live. I don't have that advantage. The island is a fine place to raise children but it's not...if I have pregnancy complications, which I might as I get older, they may not be equipped to handle it."

"I understand that, too," Will said, and though his voice was calm, something icy and ugly stabbed at his heart at the idea of complications. It wasn't like that thought hadn't occurred to him before, and frankly, if something happened to her... having a child wasn't worth it. Not to him. But as much of a concern as that was, that wasn't even his biggest concern right now.

"I just... do you really think that right now is the best time to 'get a move on', considering?"

"Considering what, Will? I'm healthy, you're healthy, you obviously have a will and follow-through to complete the necessary sex act. I need this, Will. But I need it to be safe for me and I'm running out of time."

Helen rubbed the bridge of her nose and sighed. She'd anticipated this going much, much better.

"Considering Druitt's here," Will said, a little surprised he had to spell it out for her. It wasn't just the fact that Will wasn't as sure as Magnus seemed to be that Druitt was actually as sane as he seemed, it was that maybe, just maybe, there might be some conflicting feelings there that needd to be resolved before they made such a major life decision.

"Even John wouldn't hurt a baby," Helen scoffed, shaking her head. "And I don't think he'll hurt me. He's sane, Will, I know he is. Bit bullheaded in insisting that I still love him and actually I'm cross with him for mauling me under the mistletoe but..."

The set of her mouth was firm and her words clear. "I think it'll be all right. I want a baby with you, Will. I want everyone to know I belong to you."
