Epic literacy fail

I'm not surprised by the general public's lack of cultural literacy and awareness anymore. But I'm still surprised every time people come into the library (usually at the beginning of the semester) looking for the bookstore. They always do, and there are always many of them. I understand that you might not be familiar with the library, or how to look up a book, or the difference between a circulating and a reference collection. I realize that the last time you were in a library may have been when you were eight, or four, or never. But do you really not know the difference between a library and a bookstore? You buy cars at the Ford or Toyota dealership, you rent them from Hertz or Avis. Do you go down to Hertz and ask to buy a car? Or to the Ford dealership asking to borrow an F-150 for the weekend? How hard is this distinction to understand? You know the words "library" and "bookstore" - why do you not know what they mean?

And then there's this:

book rental service?

was just thinking. my sister does -alot- of reading, and spends like $1000 a year on just books alone. most of them she reads once then never looks at again. is there any kind of like…video rental store but for books? would make things alot cheaper, plus once one person had read one the next person can get enjoyment from it etc

Well. At least she's trying to do something nice for her sister.
