Well, comrades, I came to a conclusion over this weekend. I had been looking on Yahoo and saw that one of the headlines read that Austin,TX had been declared the #1 movie-making city in America by MovieMaker Magazine. My curiosity aroused, I did a little more research and saw that a beautiful
film studio was being built not too far from the city and that the state was giving HUUUGE grants to Texan film makers. For a feature film, we could receive 2 million dollars. Not too shabby.
Now, I had always assumed I was going into stage work because I hate LA. I can't stand it. It's pure shallow stupidity which I can't tolerate. Austin is a much much much better city and, apparently, one that's on the brink of becoming big. I can do film there (and it's significantly cheaper to live there) and everything can turn out ok. Fancy that.
I actually have been getting disgruntled with the NY theatre scene recently anyway: it seems as if you choose to write about anything that doesn't involve feminism or homosexuality, your script is not taboo enough to be taken seriously. Film, of course, does not come with such a tedious mandate.
On the other hand, you can't really do monologues in film, but I can deal with that. And even then, you can use them but you can't use them often and when they're there, they need a damn good reason to be there. I think it's a fair trade.
Yeah... I'm thinking good choice.
