The Sun (pt.1)

Jan 05, 2012 18:16

So far, 2012 consists of Sunshine, Cillian Murphy, Red Eye, Inception, Chris Evans, fanfiction, cleaning, and feeling cold.

Florida is experiencing a damn cold front (inevitable, I know), but it was 20 degrees outside yesterday morning when I was heading to work and it was not pleasant. I did not want to get out of bed and earlier, I decided to research why in the freaking world does Winter exist?
This is a question I should have known the answer to, but apparently, it is because of Earth's rotation on its axis and how the angle at which light hits the Earth at any given point is slanted, so there's less heat building up and spreading out.

It all comes back to the point that is, the sun is a magnificent star and without it, I (and mankind) would most certainly be unhappy. Every time the sun is shining down on me, or I'm glancing out my window, I am reminded at how beautiful the sun is and feels thanks to Sunshine.

Sunshine, if you haven't seen it and enjoy really well done scifi movies, watch it! Oh, I should probably tell you about the story xD
It's about 8 astronauts and scientists flying towards the sun with a bomb/payload in order to re-ignite it. Due to Qballs (though it's not directly mentioned in the movie), the sun's natural processes are disrupted and it's dying. A previous crew, The Icarus, did not make it for unknown reasons so this crew, Icarus II, is the final chance. This a slow-building story full of the emotions that accompany the idea that you are Earth's last hope and that you may die in the vast emptiness that is space, but there is also a hidden environmental message as well as commentary on faith vs. science. Danny Boyle (famous for 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire) really captured the emotional points of this story and I think that's why it's stuck so much with me.

The SFX are gorgeous! The ensemble cast apart from Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans, includes Michelle Yeoh (♥), Sanada Hiroyuki, Cliff Curtis, Rose Byrne, Troy Garity, and Benedict Wong.

It's not meant to be all-knowing about the facts of space, even though they tried really hard (lectures from Brian Cox, visiting CERN, reading up on the topic), but I think it's based in solid ideas. It's also not meant to scare the shit out of you, but I will say there are 2 particularly ":O" moments. MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!!!! -->highlight
When I first watched it in the theaters and suddenly there were random pictures popping up on Icarus I, I was like :o WTF!? I started slumping down in my chair hiding my face xD
The other scary part was when Capa asked Icarus about the crew's biometrics:

Icarus: Capa; warning. You are dying. All crew are dying.
Capa: We know we're dying. Were OK with it, just as long as we have enough oxygen to reach the payload delivery point.
Icarus: Capa; warning, you do not have enough oxygen to survive until the payload delivery point.
Capa: Please clarify.
Icarus: Twelve hours before crew will be unable perform complex tasks. Fourteen hours before crew will be unable to perform basic tasks. Sixteen hours until death. Time to payload delivery point, 19 hours.
Capa: Negative, Icarus. We have enough oxygen for four crew members to survive.
Icarus: Affirmative. 4 crew members could potentially survive on current oxygen reserves.
Capa: Trey is dead. There are only four crew members; Cassie, Mace, Corazon and me.
Icarus: Negative. Five crew members.
Capa: Icarus... who is the fifth crew member?
Icarus: Unknown.
Me: DDDDD: Creeeeppy~
However, those are also highlights in the film for me, because it gets things moving :)

Capa and Mace are the two characters that I can't get enough of; Capa for his quiet and calming presence and Mace for his level-headed determination to get the mission done. I think I love Capa the most because he's unassuming, straight forward, guy despite being the physicist whose bomb is gonna (hopefully) save the world. I love moments when he just stares at you with his pale blue eyes without saying a word. I think I just get hadjf;ldkjah about him because he is a physicist and I love men who are smart ^^ And sometimes, Cillian's Irish accent breaks through and I melt :9

I dug around FF.net and found this awesome writer named Punctuator. He's a big fan of Cillian so he's written for most of his major movies. Lucky for me! One of my favorites is Psych because it depicts the pre-mission relationship between Capa and Cassie. I don't usually ship them, but I think he gave us a nice look into the beginnings of their close friendship :)

I also found myself enjoying his Red Eye fanfic called DOA, an AU where Lisa and Jackson actually get together after the first unpleasant incident xD

When I couldn't find enough media on Cillian Murphy (which is tough because the guy's done a gazillion indie movies, but I'm more addicted to Capa than anything else), I scrounged for Chris Evans media. I found this gem of a video where he talks seven things about himself.
@1:56 he says that the favorite movie he's ever done is Sunshine, and I get all giddy because I'm glad he loves it too ^^ It's also awesome, because he's not just saying it for publicity as he was promoting for Push at the time :)

I'm proud to say that I'm one of those 7 people who saw it, lol. Gosh, what I would do to see it in the theaters again. The visuals were gorgeous on the big screen. You can bask in so much sun particularly in those finals scenes ♥

On my hunt for Cillian and Chris, I did not find any publicity photos with both of them in the same shot. WHY IS THIS?! Not that they’re my OTP, but I would appreciate if two of my favorite character’s actors actually interacted with each other off-screen. But then, it would give me fodder to write for them, right? xD

As I mentioned, I watched it the night of the 28th and I've probably re-watched it 7 more times since then. I have a problem T_T

I shall leave you with this song:
