And in the third ep...
I couldn't help but capture Mukai's smile :D
And I adore Yuichi :) He totally noticed something was wrong with Kamogawa :)
And he totally saw her crying one day, so he asked, "Will you go on a date with me?" to cheer her up, CUTE! :D
And then I waited for the subs to come out before I wrote this review, because I knew I was missing important parts of the dialogue. What's great about this part was Yuichi's monologue about Gagarin.
If you smile, you become closer to reaching space. I like that idea ^^
I liked this long shot, probably because it captures the dilemma of the plot of characters in this episode:)
Basically, Kiryu finds out Asumi-chan is the daughter of the man who 'caused' the Lion accident (who incidentally killed his parents), so he feels that she has no right to aim for space.
That's also what's fueling him in the Engineering department; he wants to create a future where humans can be replaced by robots in space, therefore nobody would be risking any lives for the advancement of the human race.
He hopes machines will make it safer for people, but he also protects his own heart this way. Not only can you replace a machine, but you're less attached to it as you are to a loved one/human being.
I really loved the double-sided meaning to his actions, even though I thought he was being immature about reacting to Kamogawa's ambitions. It's not her fault the Lion exploded, and we're not even sure it was entirely her dad's fault either.
And omw, I love Fuchuya-kun. He was totally protective of Asumi:) When Kiryu made her cry, he's like, "let me tell you something. She lost her mom in that incident too; don't be a douche bag (my adlib here:P). I'm not gonna lose to you at tomorrow's challenge."
He totally got all super serious and yea. And I loved how in the beginning he wouldn't tell Asumi his reasons for wanting to go to space, and I have a sneaking suspicion that he wants to accompany her there:)
♥!!!!
Cute moment! :D Ukita-san finally admits they are friends, even if they are still rivals too :)
Very serene and pretty:)
With things out in the open, both seem to have patched up their friendship:)
He even kept up with the 'looks like you're gonna bite your tongue if you talk any faster' joke as a sign that things were alright :)
YAY:D
In episode 4...The main dilemma was about the progression of sending one of the kids from this program to work with NASA. But more importantly, for the characters, it was about trying to stop Fuchuya-kun from quitting the course.
Kiryu-san also talks with Asumi and her dad, separately, and apologized for blaming them. He's hoping to move forward as he goes abroad to continue his studies.
There's this scene where Kiryu just told Asumi he's leaving in a couple of days for a rather extended period of time and she's like "...ganbatte kudasai," 'cause it's the only thing she can think to say without tearing up...
Fuchuya happens to be there and Kiryu looks up and asks, "Is it okay for you not to run after her?"
And he goes, "I'm thinking about quitting this course. I should probably stop running after her."
Meaning quitting the course is kind of symbolic of him trying to stop 'running' after her (relationship wise). I was like 'ooooo, that is deep.' :/
But later, he's ever the protective best friend and he tells Asumi to go send Kiryu off. I ADORE what he says too:
When I see you [liking Kiryu], I see myself and it pisses me off. The problem with both of us is that we hesitate to express our feelings, and that's no good.
♥ x gazillion
And we finally find out that his reason of joining the course is sense of responsibility, following Asumi, but also a love for space. That was kind of obvious in the beginning, but I love how Haijima-sensei was like, "You don't have to quit. There are other ways to space."
And I love that she's always encouraging like that, 'as long as you have a reason, it doesn't matter the reason, you can reach for your goals.' :D
I also love how Asumi's dad seems a little bit more accepting of Asumi's dream:)
And when he hears the way Asumi talks about Kiryu (who gave him a water rocket to give to Asumi as a parting gift), he says, "You're lucky to have met someone that makes you feel that way. The next time, saying goodbye will be hard."
And during all this, Sano-sensei is dealing with Ukita's mom, because she's pushing for sending a student to work with NASA, and he's like, "They're not ready. They would only be useless over there. Do you want to crush them before they even have a chance?"
And then she goes on a political spiel about how doing this will signify the end of the terrible "Lion" accident, and that they should be grateful we have such advancements etc. blargh:/
And of course, Sano-sensei is about to blow a fuse, because his wife is in a coma due to the accident, and he's like "THAT PERIOD IS STILL NOT OVER. I AM LIVING IT RIGHT DAMN NOW! GRATEFUL?! ARE YOU FRAKING OUT OF YOUR MIND, WOMEN?! I DON'T THINK MY WIFE BEING IN A COMA WILL BE SOMETHING I'M GRATEFUL FOR!"
Well, he didn't say that, LOL, but he should have. He only said that that period after the accident isn't over. Which is totally true, I was so pissed hearing her talk though:/
In the end, he stands up for his opinions and quits teaching the course.
Look up...Space isn't a dream; it's real.
And when they finally stopped looking, he was gone.
I loved loved loved the message he was trying to tell them: space isn't just your dream, it's real. You can make it a reality:D
And finally, they all head to the cafeteria and Kei brings up the point that it's summer vacation, wondering how long Fuchuya would stick around.
Suddenly, everyone's saying their farewells; I love Shu's phrase:
But then he's like 'wtf, I haven't left yet....in fact, I'm not leaving at all:D'
I now have a sudden crush on him, and his crooked smile ♥
But yea, and they all go 'WTF! APOLOGIZE'
It's SO great:D
WOW, the ending :o
I didn't expect a 'man-down' situation until Shu started having a nosebleed, and then I sensed something would be wrong.
At first, I felt really bad for both Shu and Kamogawa, because each person's smart enough to know that if one goes down, the other is going to take his place. At least they were friends till the very end ♥
Quick fun fact: Nanami-chan has worked with Yuichi several times now. This is their 3rd collaboration after "Gymnasium Baby" and "Dokyusei (Classmate)," which were sort of back-to-back films.
A couple of things stuck in my mind while everything started piling together towards the end of the series. First was Shu's trivia about the founder of Pluto. His ashes were placed on the planet (its status down-graded last year), when he died.
I find that utterly beautiful and somehow, I knew that that was a prelude to what was ahead.
The last thing the group did together was have a picture taken together:) And the last major act of friendship (with lots of technological tinkering by Fucchi) was to create a hologram projector of galaxy for
Shu to display in his hospital room at night. Who knew that was the last time he'd have a chance to 'reach for the stars' (and in the end, not be able to)...
I cried buckets, I tell you. But it was truly a beautiful ending. Shu did pass away, suddenly, and I just couldn't hold it in. Kei was being all brave and trying not to think about it, but in the end, she caved too. That necklace is going to stay with her forever.
The funeral was SO sad, and Shu's little sister played a piano piece as dedication/honor to him and his
friends. Shu was a smart guy; he knew this was coming and planned ahead. The song his sister played was "Neko Funjyatta," the song that Kei requested he play when he reached outer space.
Not only does that show just how close their friendships were, but also that he might have loved Kei just as much as she did ♥
Asumi got a lot of media coverage after that, and she was feeling guilty, and I don't blame her. But then again, the show did provide two good points. You need friendships, but you also need to fulfill your dreams
and goals too.
There's this particular part where the media is using Asumi's story about losing Shu as a way of good PR for space exploration and having a heroine to lead it, and in the end it seems like she has to choose going to NASA or being a good friend.
To an outsider, she might have seemed cold and harsh on the day she didn't attend Shu's 'sending-off' ceremony, but I knew there were good reasons.
1. She didn't want to be used or let Shu's death be used in such a PR manner.
2. She was going to go to space on her own terms and skills.
3. She had to be strong, because Shu would've wanted it no other way:)
The latter is the most true, especially since Shu had sent a video message to Asumi, but didn't get to send it properly until his sister found the file in his phone. Because she didn't attend an important friends'
burial, her other friends were really upset and their relationship strained, but it was like they all knew it was what she had to do.
In real life, I know some communication and explanation would be best, but the camera doesn't always shoot the story on-screen:)
At the very end, we got to see everyone 5 years later. Asumi still looked very young, but we saw her as the new mentor of the program. Fucchi got new glasses, not sure what his job was though, lol. Kei seems to be in photography still and Marika seems to be something of an astrophysicist? She was wearing a lab coat so maybe it was space-related medicine? In any case, everyone looked good.
We got to see Mukai (looking very sophisticated) one last time in the middle of the ep, trying to console Asumi:)
Sano and Kamogawa finally mended their friendship and started a new shuttle design company:)
But in the end, Shu got to go into space after all. Asumi scattered his ashes there.
Do you know what a supernova is?
It's when a star is nearing the end of its time and all that energy is built up and it explodes. While it seems as if the star doesn't exist anymore, its ashes become the building blocks and are scattered, giving new life to new stars. That original star never truly dies.
That is what Suzuki Shu is now~
He went out with a bang ♥
