Earbuds, as opposed to traditional headphones are a standard way for iPod users to listen to their music. Whether or not the earbuds themselves are more damaging to the ear than traditional headphones has been disputed, but earbuds, being placed directly in the ear can boost the loudness of the sound by as much as 6 to 9 decibels. This, plus the fact that many people tend to play their music at harmful levels for extended periods of time, is damaging to the ears.
There are precautions one can take to greatly reduce the potential for hearing loss. Researchers have come up with what they call the "60 percent/60 minute rule." That is, headphone listening one hour a day with volume no higher than 60% should be safe. If one listens for over an hour, it is recommended turn the volume below 60%.
