Premise
Micah, 12, is a psychic. He's been psychic all his life. He lives in the suburbs with his protective father, Marcus, and sister, Anna, who help him process his power and teach him how to hide it at school. One day, as they come home from school, Micah and Anna discover their house on fire. They go to live with Anna's best friend, Em. Em's personality changed dramatically 6 months ago, when she came back from a music camp. They discover that Em has developed unusual powers, and as they come across similar teenagers, they begin to look into the mysterious Eden Corporation and their scientific experiments.
Alex Ferris as 'Micah North'
Age: 12
Power: Psychic
Micah has been dealing with his psychic powers all his life, but as he enters puberty his visions are becoming stronger and more painful. Until now, he has only ever had disconnected and relatively unimportant flashes of possible futures. His attempts to hide his ability has caused him to be shy, finding his outlet in his love of comic books and movies, where he actually feels like he can connect with people. He blames himself for his mother leaving and his father's death, and takes the love and protection of his big sister for granted. He is very smart and a teachers' pet, and gets along with adults better than other children of his own age.
Also, Micah hates vegetables. He tells Anna it's because he's seen that he's going to die by choking to death on broccoli. This is a lie.
Molly Quinn as 'Anna North'
Age: 16
Power: ...optimism.
Anna is Micah's older sister. She is fiercely protective of him, and fiercely, almost defiantly optimistic. In spite of the tragedies that have befallen her family, she almost always looks on the bright side of things and the most positive outcomes. Although she sometimes feels left out or weak because she is surrounded by more powerful people, she is the person who thinks of the practical necessities of living, such as food and education. She is a caregiver, and without her most of the other characters would be pretty lost.
Anna has been lectured about the importance of being a good big sister and protecting her brother since she can remember. Her father, Marcus, used every opportunity to teach her lessons about how to hide and protect her family. He was closer to Micah, and didn't know how to handle Anna once she became a teenager, but Anna still loves her father and is grateful and respectful of the lessons he taught her.
Emiko Miyazaki
Age: 16
Power: Kung fu
Em was a normal teenage girl - she used to be snarky, and cheat off Anna in class, and fight with her mother, and talk to Anna on the phone for hours - until she came back from a camp about six months ago. Now she's very quiet and serious, only occasionally snarky, and contained. Her similar personality to her mother causes the two of them to butt heads. She has trouble letting anyone in aside from Anna, who is her oldest and best friend. She provides bodyguard duties for Anna and Micah, and is distrustful and wary of every new person they add to their group. She particularly clashes with June, on to whom she projects both her mother issues and her dislike of her newfound powers.
The change in Em's personality is due to her discovery of her new powers after her return from camp. In order to make her such a good fighter, the organisation had to give her a taste for violence. Em has to work hard to keep her compulsion for violence under control - she put a boy in hospital for feeling her up in the lunch line, and nearly killed the Eden Corporation thugs who came after Anna and Micah. She does strike up a grudging friendship with Nick, based on mutual admiration.
Chloe Moretz as 'Cassie'
Age: 14
Power: Can manipulate electric fields
Cassie grew up in a broken and dysfunctional home where she lived with her alcoholic mother and abusive brother. When she sent a static charge through her brother strong enough to send his heart into arrhythmia, she ran away from home. Her power means that she can manipulate electricity and magnetism, as well as essentially make herself 'float' if she is around a metal surface. She has used these powers to steal to keep a moderately comfortable lifestyle alone.
Cassie is wild and doesn't think ahead at all. She gets herself into all these crazy situations and then relies on instinct, luck and improvisation to get her out of them, and sometimes that doesn't work and the others have to save her. She doesn't think about the consequences of what she says or does, and Micah is completely in love with her but she has no idea.
Colby Paul as 'Alexei'
Age: 18
Power: Psychic connection with Nick
Alexei and Nick have been together every day for about nine months - which is when they realised that Alexei's major organs started shutting down if Nick got more than about a hundred feet away from him. Alexei nearly died in the hospital before they figured it out. When they are separated by more than 50 feet, Alexei starts to feel weak, but he can see everything that Nick can see. At this point, Nick actually gets stronger, making him better at dealing with threats, and they can hear each other's thoughts.
As a result of his complete dependence on Nick and that frustration, Alexei has a huge chip on his shoulder. He's also extremely sarcastic and funny. The boys are searching for a cure, a fix so that they can be separated, but Alexei is also carrying a lot of hurt that Nick is so desperate to get rid of him. Anna adores Alexei, and he is at his nicest around her.
Luke Pasqualino as 'Nick'
Age: 19
Power: Psychic connection with Alexei, increased strength
Nick is responsible, patient and kind, but he can have an explosive temper if pushed. He's essentially dealing with the fact that another person's life is entirely dependant on him, which is a hell of a lot of responsibility for someone his age. It's like having a conjoined twin, but suddenly getting him just as Nick was on the verge of independence and adulthood. He really cares about Alexei, but it's a lot to handle.
Alexei and Nick meet Anna, Micah and Em while searching for a cure for their connection. Nick becomes the leader of the search to find out what happened to all these kids, and his anger about his condition is the foundation of his friendship with Em. He and Cassie have a fairly volatile relationship, thanks to her love of her powers and lack of interest in 'fixing' them.
Nick loves video games.
Eve Prescott
Age: A lady doesn't tell.
An English scientist, Eve Prescott was only a student working on what she expected to be a ground-breaking thesis in neurology when she arrived in America twenty years ago. She’s now the leader of the Eden Corporation, the organisation that experimented on the kids and gave them their powers. She’s actually not working alone but has a partner whose identity is a mystery. She’s convinced that the organisation is doing the right thing and that it all comes down to a higher purpose.
Eve always seems calm, speaks politely and she inspired respect instantly to her employees. Her methods are ruthless and she goes by the principle “the ends justify the means”. This doesn’t mean she’s cold or heartless. She never talks about her past or her family to anyone. In fact, she doesn’t talk about anything other than work to anyone. Employees like to joke around and say she’s a robot and works 24/7. Well, behind her back and after checking for cameras and microphones. They all know what happened to Eddie the tech guy.
Marcus North
Age: 45
From afar, Marcus North is your perfect everyman. A stable job, a good place in the community, well-behaved kids that he’s raising on his own, endearing himself to all. But no one knows what happened to the Norths before they arrived in town a few years ago. Marcus never talks about the mother of his children and everyone assumes she died and that the wound is still wide open. He’s not a man of many words, except with Micah to whom he’s closer. He’s over-protective of his kids, especially the boy, and really pressed upon Anna the importance of protecting her brother without explaining why.
One day, the house burns down and Marcus is killed. His past and his relationship with the mother of Anna and Marcus will be explored at lengths in flashbacks. Marcus knew more than he let on and went out of his way to protect the kids, as well as find out more about the Eden Corporation.
June Chopra
Age: 35
June Chopra is an idealist. Her dream was to become a doctor and work for the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders. But when her parents died in a car accident, she had to take care of her brother and sister and there was no question of studying medicine or going off abroad helping distressed people anymore. Not when people at home needed her help. So she got a very well-paid position in the mysterious Eden Corporation, working with kids. She didn’t really know what was really happening at first but she knows she doesn’t feel comfortable there. Her colleagues are either weird or seem to lack empathy.
She gets along very well with the kids and cares for them but wishes she had an adult to talk to and confide in. When she finds out what her company is really doing to the kids, she vows to do everything in her power to make it stop and starts helping from within the corporation.
Shintaro Miyazaki
Age: 46
Shintaro Miyazaki is a proud businessman. He always talks about how he started from nothing and made his own luck. When his daughter came back from camp acting more serious and mature, he began to feel closer to her.
Reiko Miyazaki
Age: 39
Reiko is a cautious woman who doesn’t give her trust easily. When Emiko comes back from camp, she instantly feels there’s something different about her and finds it hard to accept. She is strong-minded and serious.
