Prompt: My Favorite Weapon

Notes: My entry for the 1st fic challenge at whedonland. There's a hidden reference to another fandom... can you guess what it is?
Book was sitting on his bed, trying to put the few pages he’d been able to retrieve from River back in his Bible. The complete paragraph about Lazarus’ resurrection was crossed out in red and the girl had written ‘incompetent coroner’ in the margin. The Shepherd sighed. This really was a peculiar ship to be on. And he’d seen his fair share of peculiar back in the day.
There were days he really wished he hadn’t left his other Bible at the Abbey. It was a bigger edition than the one he had here. The cover was brown, with a few very simple golden ornaments and the words ‘Holy Bible’ in English on one side and in Chinese on the other side. Elegant, it inspired respect and even a certain awe. The definition of a sacred book. But this was not the reason why it was Book’s favorite possession. By experience he’d found out that its hard cover was very efficient at hitting a man in the face. Twice. A man you don’t want to see get on his feet anytime soon.
And it was hollowed out, too. Enough to fit a small gun.
‘Books! Best weapons in the Universe!’ his old-fashioned English teacher used to say. And sometimes they really were.

Or else he's out of there.

Death's her gift. And his curse.
