Summary: After revealing who he really was to the Winchesters, Gabriel decided to secretly help them from the sideline without them knowing about it and only with little things here and there. Gabriel stood in the corner of the older hunter's panic room, Sam Winchesters lay on the bed yelling and screaming bloody murder; he was yelling for his brother and Gabriel had a feeling that it was eating away at Dean, who was standing right outside the door, to hear his younger brother and not being able to help him. Gabriel had entered with them, staying invisible the whole time as he watched Castiel all but dragged Dean from the room, leaving Sam inside the room to get over the demon-blood that he had drank.
He slowly moved from the shadows not really needing them to stay hidden, he was still a little shock that Castiel hadn't sense him; he guessed that his little brother was farther from the host than he thought to not be able to feel him standing right next to him. He stopped a few steps from the bed as Sam turned onto his side, facing him though Gabriel knew that the human couldn't see him.
A wave of guilt washed over him seeing Sam's eyes closed tightly as another scream left the hunter's lips. He should had helped them against Famine, done something to aid them but he just wasn't ready to show himself; to left the host know that he was alive. Instead he had stood on the sidelines, watching as poor Sam and Castiel was forced to give into the pull of Famine's powers and as they almost lost the fight but now he found himself not wanted to stand there anymore.
He stood those few feet away as he slowly drop his power, making himself known to anyone in the room but Sam's eyes were still so tightly closed he didn't seem to noticed Gabriel now standing in front of him. He sighed feeling that lump of guilt in his stomach start to grow, he could have save Sam from all of this pain but he didn't and now they were all suffering for it. Gabriel glanced towards the door, he could still feel Castiel standing out there but Dean if seemed have left. Looking back to the young human Gabriel kneeled to be eye level with him, he slowly reach out towards him but stopped mere inches from touching Sam's forehead.
″Sam?″ Gabriel whispered pulling his hand back, ″Sam, can you hear me?″
There was no answered and a moment Gabriel believed that Sam was too consumed by the pain to hear anything but he own screams. He dropped his head his hands running through his hair before he looked back, sighing he reach back out towards Sam's forehead he knew that he wouldn't be able to heal Sam all of the way; Archangel or not, Sam have drank a lot of demon-blood and he would only be able to reduce the pain that he was currently feeling. Closing the distance between them Gabriel placed two fingers on Sam's forehead and released some of his Grace, letting it flow into the hunter. It had been a while since he used his true for healing, he's been too afraid that the host would feel it and know that he was alive but he found himself not really caring able that right now; now he just wanted to help Sam.
In the short time that he had been following the Winchesters, after they found out who he truly was, he had found himself staying closer to Sam than to Dean, helping him whenever he could without giving himself away; it was little things here and there. He had try to tell himself that it was just because Sam was Lucifer's true vessel that he was drawn to the boy, Gabriel had loved both of his brother dearly but he was always closer to Lucifer over Michael; now though he wasn't sure. As the pain on Sam's brow lessened, Gabriel sighed thankful that he was able to do something for Sam, his own pain of guilt lessen as the screams faded to nothing more than whimpers. He pulled his hand back as he stood planning on taking a seat at the desk that sat in the corner of the room but stopped upon hearing a new sound.
″Gabriel?″
Gabriel froze, hoping that Sam would just go back to sleep and forget that he was there.
″Gabriel, please don't...″
Cursing himself later Gabriel turned to Sam and was in for a surprise, the hunter's eyes were still closed, he had no idea that Gabriel was there. He was filled with confusion as Sam called out for him again, begging him not to...do what; he wasn't sure. Walking back over to the bed, this time all the way over, he knelt back down placing a hand on Sam's shoulder. ″Hey Kiddo, I'm here and I'm not going anywhere,″ he said unsure if Sam could even hear him.
He soon got his answer though when pain filled hazel eyes open to meet his, there was a moment of silence as if Sam was trying to figure out what was going on before he said anything, ″Gab...reil?″
″The one and only,″ Gabriel said a small smile on his face.
″What's going...″ Sam's question was cut by a hiss of pain.
″You're in that old hunter's panic room, Dean and Castiel locked...″ Gabriel stopped not sure how much Sam remembered, he didn't know how Sam would react to being locked up yet again by his brother.
″You're not here,″ Sam whisper.
Gabriel was hurt; he pulled back as if Sam had slapped him although he wasn't sure why those three words cut him so much. Why should Sam believe that he was really here, after everything that he has put the brothers through, he was sure that if Sam was in his right mind he would be getting holy oil thrown onto him along with a match. He leaned forwards moving closer to Sam's head, ″I'm here Sammy, if I wasn't could I do this?″ He squeezed on Sam's shoulder getting a gasp from the human, ″See, hallucinations can't hurt you Sammy, I'm really here no matter what you think.″
Sam groaned rolling out of Gabriel's hold, turning over on the bed looking away from him, ″Go away.″
Gabriel's stomach did another loop on itself, those words shouldn't get to him like this, he shook his head replacing his hand on Sam's shoulder. ″No can do Sammy, I'm not going anywhere.″
″Don't...call me...Sammy.″ Sam curled in on himself wrapping his arms around his stomach, another cry of pain leaving him.
Gabriel watched as the hunter started showing sighs of the pain coming back, he sighed trying to think of something that he could to help but he could only keep dulling the pain for awhile. There were moving from outside the door, Gabriel glanced to the door throwing his shield up in time to see Bobby looking through the little window.
″He looks better,″ the elder hunter said turning to someone, Gabriel guessed that it was Castiel; he hadn't felt Dean coming back yet. ″He probably gonna be in there for awhile though, why don't you go find Dean, make sure that that idjit doesn't do anything stupid.″
Gabriel sighed as Bobby shut the window; he was silent waiting for the sound of footstep going up the stairs. There was even a sound that he hadn't heard in a long time, the sound of wings and he knew that Castiel was now gone as well. Turning back to Sam, he dropped his power letting himself be knew again, ″Look like it's just you and me Sammy.″
″Don't call...″
″Yeah, yeah, I know, don't call you Sammy. Sure thing Kiddo,″ Gabriel gave a sad smiled, even though he was in pain, Sam was still being his stubborn self; protecting the nickname meant for Dean alone. He patted Sam's shoulder before standing and moving to the desk where Dean had left a glass of water, picking it up he moved back to Sam's side, ″Here,″ he said holding the glass to Sam's lips, ″drink some this, it might help.″ Some mumbled words came from Sam as his hand tried pushing Gabriel's away, Gabriel was a little confused at first and then it hit him. ″It's okay, it's just water, nothing else.″
Some more words were muttered before Sam's hand dropped to the bed and he slowly lifted his head at an angle to drink some of the water, ″That′s it Sam.″ Gabriel held the cup until Sam started coughing, pulling it away he found his free hand reaching out to brush the loose bangs from Sam's eyes; he could see perspiration starting to form on Sam's forehead and Gabriel had a feeling that the pain was going to get unbearable for Sam in a minuet or two. Standing Gabriel set the glass back on the desk and as he moved back to Sam's side he created a small wash-trowel out of thin air; taking hold of Sam's shoulders he made to pick the hunter up but only shoved away.
″Get away from me!″ Sam yelled slapping Gabriel's hands away from him.
″Clam down Sam, I'm not going to hurt you.″ Gabriel fought against Sam's arms as they flew about trying to get him to go away, he was able to get close enough to lay the palm of his hand on Sam's cheek letting his Grace flow into the hunter to clam him. The hunter's arms dropped to the bed as all of the fight seemed to leave him at once. Gabriel sighed moving to pick Sam up into a sitting position, taking a seat at the head of the bed before laying Sam back down, resting the hunter's head on his lap. Using the wash-trowel he slowly wiped the sweat off of Sam's forehead while rubbing his other hand up and down Sam's arm.
Gabriel watch as Sam's brow displayed the battle that he was fighting with the pain and that loop in the pit of his stomach was coming back. Gabriel didn't understand it, when he first met the Winchester brothers he thought they were just more hunters trying to kill the Trickster but after he found out who they were he had to have some fun with them; most of all little Sammy but now he regretted putting the young human through all of that. When he planned to help the Winchesters, he never thought that his feelings towards the human would change like this; he still couldn't say what it was that he was feeling but he had found himself being pulled to Sam; he was beginning to see what Castiel saw in these two and it was starting to scare him. He didn't want to be drawn back into his brothers′ battle but this was the last straw, he couldn't sit back while these two human proved time and time again why he should be helping them.
Gabriel could feel the tight muscles loosen as a sigh left Sam, ″That's right Sam, you're safe now, nothing is going to happen to you now that I'm here.″ He had made up his mind, he was going to show himself to them after Sam was back to normal. He was going to help them fight his brothers. Gabriel was finally picking a side.
