More Bustley Progress!

The frilled back petticoat ended up taking me a day and a half to sew together, WAY longer than I had thought! There was so much detail that went into it, but it was SO worth it because it looks amazing! I took it all into Tafe today, and took some photos of each piece on the mannequin. I didn't take photos of the Shot Taffeta underskirt as I do need to fix the waistband on that. I played around with the back section on the mannequin and worked out how I want it to sit. I need to cut some tulle and lining to sit in the upper back section of this skirt, to help maintain the bustling at the back. I'm still trying to work out how I'm going to work the tapes in the back too. Though since this is going to be an underskirt for the day dress only, I'm not too fussed about getting it finished for the ball. (As an aside, I'm thinking of setting myself a deadline of a month after the ball to have the day bodice and underskirts finished, otherwise I might not get it done :P).

Photo 1: My bustle. I ended up tying the tapes tighter to get more of a shelf, though I'll have to redo them on me as I'm a different shape to the mannequin. There ends up being a bit of a hollow in the very top, so I'm going to make a bum roll to sit here to help support the bustle.
Photo 2 & 3: The first petticoat. Made from bleached calico using the TV petticoat pattern, with the 5 tucks in the middle section, and frills added to the upper back section. I'm really happy with how it turned out, though I don't plan to make another one any time soon! I wish I'd had enough lace to edge the ruffles, but sadly not. I do have some lace put aside to add to the hem of the petticoat if I have time at the end. It will be laid over the top of the hem, rather than stitched to the bottom (if that makes sense?). I've also got some skinny pink ribbon that perfectly matches my embroidered taffeta to thread through this lace.

Front and Back of the Calico petticoat, made using the same TV skirt pattern as the two underskirts. I am so happy with how the back looks, I've been playing around with different ways of pleating/gathering the back section into the waistband. I've got some pale pink poplin washed and ready to be cut up into a wide frill for the bottom of this petticoat. I've got to measure the hem to make sure I've got enough fabric (5m), but I'm thinking a 15inch frill. I've got both cream cotton lace and matching pale pink ribbon for the frill hem and the upper attachment. I'm thinking I'll just overlock the hem of the calico for the time being, as it will be covered by the pink frill. I might go back later and fold it over, but for the moment, it's not important.

Front and Back of the Satin Underskirt. If you compare this with how it looked without the petticoat, you can see how much of a difference the petticoat makes! It's a much nicer silhouette now, particularly from the front! I've got a narrow frill already cut out to sew onto the bottom of the skirt, though again, this is something that can be done later, as it's omission won't detract from the overall design. Still need to work out the hem; I'm thinking about using a bias tape and fusible hemming tape as it's a circular hem. Though for the back piece, I'd like to add a dust ruffle.

So that's my progress so far. Oh and I need to sew hook and bars onto all of these pieces too, as I've been using safety pins thus far and I want a nice finished look at the end. I still have quite a bit to do, but I'm pretty happy with my progress so far! I have tomorrow off Tafe, so I plan to get the overskirts cut out and sewn together, and finish off all the frills and whatnot of all the above. That will leave my bodice to be toiled and completed, plus any trimming. Oh and accessories. It's getting close to crunch time, with only a week and a half remaining!

I'm writing a separate entry for the overskirt progress, as I've taken lots of photos as a kinda tutorial thingy.
