I'm trying to set a trend for the year by journaling things when they happen! So far, so good!
Yesterday I went to the first ever
North Adelaide Vintage Fashion Fair. The exciting thing is that this is going to be a twice monthly event, which makes me very happy! I went with my friend from tafe and her boyfriend and ran into
artisticcrazy as well, whom I haven't seen since AVCon last year.
It was inevitable that I wouldn't walk away empty handed! My first purchase was a beautiful ivory 1950's hat. Now I have to tell you all the story of this hat and why it was just meant to be! The hat first came into my life last year at the
Way We Wear vintage fashion fair in late August. It was the end of the day and I'd already bought two hats and spent a fair bit of money. I tried the hat on, and whilst I really loved it, I just couldn't justify buying it, as it was really more of a dressy hat. So I left it there, and of course regretted it from that day forth. I even thought of looking up the vendor to see if I could buy it, but I couldn't remember the name of the lady. So of course for the next few months I scoured ebay looking for a similar hat, to no avail. So you can imagine my surprise and utmost delight to see the very same hat, sitting on a table with the other hats she'd be selling. So of course I bought it immediately! I'm so very happy with my new hat, thought it will need a clean. I hope to have an event to wear it to soon!
My other purchase for the day was two pairs of haircombs which match various skirts of mine. I actually wore one pair to Tafe today and received a few compliments from people on my lovely 'hair thing'. I can definitely see myself getting lots of use out of them, and I shall be on the lookout for more at future fairs! They're very easy to use, and will be particularly useful when I cut my hair again later this year (at least that's the plan!).
I pincurled my hair the night before and I was actually really happy with this set! This is tending to be my usual hairdo as it's pretty simple and I think really suits me. I pin the back curls up higher, so that their ends just touch my shoulders and the sides are pinned up high and towards the back. If my fringe section hasn't curled very well then I'll usually pin it back with the rest of the front, though yesterday my fringe miraculously curled well, so I had a nice wave along my forehead and I pinned the ends into a little curl at the side. I can almost guarantee I'll have a hard time recreating that! This is also the reason I want to cut my hair, as I really think I suit having curls that just touch my shoulders and I'm sick of having to pin it up to get that look! The skirt is one of my new ones and you can just see the lace of the petticoat I made (my mistake - I forgot to allow for the lace so it's longer than my new skirts! oops!).
My beautiful new hat! It's sooo pretty! The back has a bow with a diamante circle in the middle and the netting actually has the odd pearl attached. Actually, the hat would match perfectly with the outfit I made for
starfirephoenix's wedding ;) Next is the first pair of combs which not only match a couple of my skirts, but also perfectly match the owl earrings I bought in Brissie! Just a happy coincidence I assure you! Finally, the second pair of combs which perfectly match my most favourite rose printed skirt. I really wish I had more of that fabric because it really is divine. They also match another new pair of earrings I bought the other day with this skirt in mind.
As to my impressions of the fair, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed by the amount of second hand clothing and items that you would more expect to see in a Salvo's than a Vintage Fashion Fair. There seemed to be more 'second hand' than vintage, and I thought much of the vintage fare was largely overpriced. One stall was selling gloves for $20 and $30 A PAIR! However seeing as it was the first fair, I'm willing to be the quality and quantity will go up as time goes on. I will definitely be going again, though I will likely only go once every month or so, and not to every single fair.
I'm also thinking about looking into having a table there later in the year, once I'm moved and settled. I've got my stash of vintage patterns that I'd like to sell and I'm working on some ideas for articles of clothing, so this would be a good place to see if there is a market for what I want to sell. I also spoke to my mum about the possibility of her sending me down some things to sell and she's very keen on the idea. She makes soft and net petticoats and a variety of different skirts and though her current market is rock n roll and square dance, I think they could also be popular amongst vintage and swing dance enthusiasts! Particularly her petticoats, as she usually sells hers for between $15 and $30 (for soft, the net ones are more expensive) and the ones I often see advertised are double that price! I've been trying to convince her to start selling on ebay or etsy, but I think this could be a good compromise as we could see how popular her stuff is in the vintage market, and she also takes orders. She's willing to split the proceeds with me (yay, income!) and I might even start making them myself if they're popular enough (mum has a full time job, takes orders from dancers and for a ballet shop, and she dances herself 3 or 4 times a week, so she's a very busy lady!). So I'm definitely keen to see how the fair grows!
