Chapter Nine - Connected
Key looked at his parents, eyes wide as he took in the information they were feeding him. He almost wanted to laugh, yet the pain he felt, dissipated that thought.
"We werent sure how to tell you, Kibum. Introducing you to Hyeongseop was our only way of protecting you...and your friend Jonghyun." His father looked down in defeat.
The younger didnt know what to say, wasnt it a bit late to tell him now? Seeing how far gone he already was. When Keys parents came back from picking up a few things for their son, they noticed Jonghyun and Jinki talking on the other side of the hallway. Finding this to be the best opportunity to speak to Kibum, they made their way to the hospital room.
Taemin and Minho figured they'd give Key and his parents some space, so they left the room, taking us back to this moment, right now. Keys parents just unloaded something he should have known the moment his mother told him about the curse.
"We're so blessed and grateful to have you with us, alive and safe." Keys father said, hugging his son as his wife joined in, tears in her eyes as they smiled lovingly at their son.
"I'm okay now, dont worry anymore." Key said, weakly smiling at his parents.
"Kibummie, we need to talk to you about something important." Key's mother notioned, moving to set on the edge of the bed. The younger could only nod and gesture for his parents to continue.
"The curse...it not only has an affect on you, but the other person as well. The moment that kiss was sealed, your soul, as well as Jonghyuns', connected. Depending on how strong this connection becomes, the pain of losing one another, such as death, will physically tear apart the connection, causing extreme pain to the other person. Almost to the point of turture...until the soul has passed and the connection is no longer there. But...the fragments of that lost connection will always be there. Causing an imbalance forever in the other person forever...its almost like a curse within a curse." Key's father finished.
And here we are now.
A curse within a curse? "W-what does that mean?" The younger stuttered, he felt like he knew. He just didnt want to be right.
His mother sighed in deafeat, "It means Jonghyun will feel your pain, but increasingly more. It's almost...like torture."
Key felt like his world just came crashing down on him. He didnt want Jonghyun to suffer along with him, it wasnt fair. He blamed himself completely, he shouldnt have approached Jonghyun after that kiss. He should have dropped out of school and disappeared forever, he shouldnt have allowed the curse to grow stronger every day...with every kiss. A tear escaped his eye, he felt helpless. He's ruined Jonghyuns life, forever.
"Please dont cry, lets just be happy you're okay now." His father said, squeezing his sons shoulder, trying to reassure him.
Key looked up at his father incredulously, as if he's gone mad. "Hes going to hate me. I ruined his life." He didnt expect to lose the older man this quickly. Its only been a few days, but hes fallen so hard. He's in love with Jonghyun, yet here he was, being the cause of the older mans ailed fate. "Can we do anything?"
His parents glanced at one another, unsure of what to say. "Kibum, we're also still new to this. We expected this might happen but not now, not this soon. We've been looking for answers to all our questions-your questions. Give me some time and i'll figure something out. We both will." His father said, hoping to ease the mind of his son.
The latter looked down, tears falling down his face. "I...I need some space. If thats okay."
His parents nodded, upset at themselves for not being prepared enough and not having the power to fix this. So they walked out of the room, giving their grieving son some time to think and breathe; grieving for the relationship or friendship he would have had with Jonghyun.
Key wanted to run away, far, far away. He didnt have the guts to face the tatted man, or the guts to tell him how much he ruined the mans future. The thoughts ran through the youngers mind, destroying him slowly inside. He felt like his heart was yearning for the older, calling out to him, begging him to hold him, let his thoughts run. He knew he had to eventually speak to Jonghyun, and tell him the consequence of their own actions and wait for the older to leave him. Forever.
He closed his eyes and willed himself to sleep, tears on his face wet and dry as he slowly wiped them away. His body was weak and he felt his energy subside, allowing his mind and body to rest, furrowed eyebrowes and crinkled forehead turning smooth as calmness took over. He breathed in and out deeply; a breath that felt like may be his last.
The weight of something warm woke Key from his deep slumber, his eyes slowly opening as he took in his surroundings, it looked like it was already evening, he must have slept for quite a few hours. Looking to his side, a smile garnished his face when he saw Jonghyuns head on the side of his hip. A peaceful and sweet look on his face as he slept, Key couldnt help but admire him. He was the most handsome man Key has ever laid his eyes on, the klndest, warmest human he knew. Keys face slowly turned into a frown, sadness washing over him. He felt like the worst person ever, how will Jonghyun ever stay with him after finding out?
Jonghyun suddenly opened his eyes slowly, meeting the youngers gaze. Key blushed, looking down at the hand that Jonghyun held, which in turn was gently squeezed, giving him the attention he so deeply desired from the older.
"I'm sorry for waking you." Key almost whispered out.
"Dont be sorry, I was awake already." Jonghyun smiled.
The younger chuckled lightly, "Are you sure? That didnt look like you were sleeping." Key joked.
Jonghyun laughed in response, "Of course, im the guard dog anyways."
Key nodded, going along with what the older was saying. He missed this banter between himself and Jonghyun, it felt like normal again. "Youre such a good guard dog." He laughed and ruffled Jonghyuns hair, brown locks becoming a mess.
Jonghyun glared at the younger and pushed his hand away jokingly, "Thats not the type of reward I want."
The younger narrowed his eyes, "And what kind of reward is that?" Suddenly he saw Jonghyuns eyes lower down to his lips, his face turned crimson red at the look he was giving him.
Jonghyun's face slowly moved towards his, their faces less than an inch apart. "-Jong..." Key whispered, his lips almost grazing the olders. Jonghyun brushed his nose against Key's, almost as if to ask for permission. In response, Key just wanted those lips on his, so he brought his hands up to Jonghyuns neck, crashing their lips together. It was rough at first but slowed down and became intimate, deep.
Keys mind was blank as Jonghyun slowly pulled away, kissing his cheek, then his nose, to his forehead, his chin and back to his lips. Keys hands held the olders face; Jonghyuns hand moving ontop of his, caressing it as they continued to kiss, short delicate kisses, smiles beaming on their faces as Jonghyun gave a final kiss to his cheek. The puppy eyed man has never kissed him this much, he felt ethereal, completely out of this world.
Leaning away from one another, Jonghyun sat back down on the chair, taking Keys hand in his and kissing the back of his it.
"You should go home and rest, Jong." Key gently said, blushing as he felt Jonghyun caress his hand.
"I am home."
Key chuckled, "I mean, home, home."
Jonghyun loved watching Key laugh, it made him happy. "Have I ever told you how much I love you?"
The younger almost choked. "Of course, you're the most affectionate out of all of us. Minho included." Key chuckled, trying to laugh it off, unsure of what Jonghyun meant by this question. A part of him was hoping, or yearning for the older to be his...but he knew that couldnt happen.
Jonghyun narrowed his eyes at the younger on the bed, "I wasnt talking about anyone else." He said lowly.
"Fine. I love you too, Jong." Key said, but in a more friendly, joking way, trying to dodge anything that invloved hurting himself and Jonghyun any further.
The older stayed quiet, eyes focused on Key, it felt tense. Key didnt like this, he felt like he did something wrong. "I-im thirsty..." The younger said, trying to change the subject. Anything to make the older stop looking at him.
Jonghyun sighed in defeat and stood up to grab a glass of water for him, Keys eyes following his every move. The stiffness in the air made the younger fidget in his spot, making him want to leave the room, however, the thought of leaving Jonghyun was out of the question. He didnt want to lose him so fast. Not yet. Jonghyun walked back, handing the cup of water over to the silent Key.
"Why do you think im here, Kibum?"
The latter looked up from his cup, wide eyed and hesitant. "Why are y-you calling me...that?" Jonghyun has never called him by his name before.
"Answer the question." The older seemed to be losing his patience.
Key shook his head, "I...I dont know." His eyes lowered to his fidgeting hands.
"Dont lie."
The younger looked to the side, trying to avoid Jonghyuns gaze. "S-stop..." He couldnt admit to anything, he couldnt hurt the older even more. He moved to place the cup on the stand near the bed.
"Why are you doing this? Why are you pushing me away?" The puppy eyed man said, his heart pounding, unsure of the thoughts running through the youngers mind, but all he got was silence.
"Look at me....please."
Finally Key looked up at the older man, tears threatening to fall down his face until one eventually fell, causing Jonghyun to wipe away the tear with his thumb-caressing Keys cheek along the way. "Whats wrong? Please tell me, im right here with you." Jonghyun lowered his hand back down to hold the youngers, sqeezing it in reasurrance.
"I...Im sorry, Jonghyun. Im so sorry." Tears started running down Keys face, Jonghyun quickly pulled him into an embrace, arms holding one another tightly.
"Its okay, im right here." Jonghyun whispered, his lips moving to gently kiss the youngers exposed shoulder, the hospital gown doing little justice in hiding Key's skin.
"I have to talk to you." Key said, pushing the older away as Jonghyun sat back down, keeping their hands intertwined.
"Talk to me." Jonghyun smiled gently, urging the younger to speak by caressing the youngers hand.
Key took a deep breath in, unsure of where to start. "This curse...it doesnt only affect myself, but...it affects you too."
Jonghyun narrowed his eyes, gesturing for the younger to keep going.
"Ever since the moment we...kissed, our souls became connected. The more our lips touched, the stronger the connection became, forcing our souls to entangle. If one of us gets hurt, or if we're separated for a certain amount of time, something bad could happen-something like this. But it's not just me, you'll feel pain too. Unbearable pain. Until I pass away, the pain will eventually subside, but itll stay with you, just a torturous strain in your heart forever..."
Key couldnt even look Jonghyun in the eyes, the guilt killing him inside as he waited for the older to say something. However, all he heard was a small chuckle, looking up he met the eyes of Jonghyun; smiling at him gently. Jonghyun now understood the pain he felt during the time he was away from Key, it was bearable, but he wasnt sure what the future could bring them-for now, he was going to go with his gut.
"I'm being serious." Key said, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"Im being serious too, Key." Jonghyun said, looking down at the youngers left hand, diamond ring obnoxiously in sight. "You never took the ring off." The older continued, looking back up into Keys eyes.
"Its a gift." Key said.
"Its a promise."
Keys face turned a deep crimson, he couldnt help but move his left hand under the blanket, hiding it away from Jonghyuns prying gaze. "A promise for friendship." He retorted back at the older.
Jonghyun laughed, shaking his head at the younger. "I guess thats what I thought it was when I first gave it to you, but now its different. You spoke as if i'd be living a nightmare, Key. In my opinion, Ive already promised to protect you and to love you by giving you this ring. My mother wouldnt have wanted it any other way; for me to give it to someone I truly love, with all of my heart and soul. No matter how intertwined and tangled it gets, no matter how painful it is, id be happy just knowing i was by your side. I will never hurt you, not ever. Please believe me."
Key was shocked at the older mans confession, he definitely wasnt expecting Jonghyun to bare his heart out to him...but he was happy. Call him selfish, but he was so, so happy. "-J-jong..."
"If you want me to leave, I'll leave. But we both know thats far from what you want." Jonghyun said, leaning in closer to Keys face, lips hovering above the youngers, their breathing mixing into one anothers.
"Youre right, that is far from what I want. And youre too far right now." Key whispered, suddenly pulling Jonghyun in, lips perfectly molding against eachother. It was sweet and deep, almost naustalgic. Every kiss felt like the first time, and maybe it had something to do with the curse, but they definitely werent complaining.
Jonghyun slowly pulled away, his nose caressing the youngers as he looked into his eyes, a smile gracing his face. "I want to ask you something."
The younger hummed as a reply, waiting for Jonghyun to ask his question. "Listen carefully, okay?"
Key chuckled, "Im listening." He said, urging the older to keep going.
"I dont think youre listening enough. Come closer." Jonghyun joked, smirking.
The younger rolled his eyes as he chuckled, "I cant get any closer, Jong."
Jonghyun laughed a long with Key, giving him a gentle peck, continuing where he left off, "Will you be my boyfriend? Will you be mine forever?"
Key felt his heart roll over and leap out of his body, he didnt think Jonghyun would ever ask to be his boyfriend. His plan to push Jonghyun away ultimately failed, as soon as the man kissed him, his walls fell down and vanished. All his worries and stresses melting away with every kiss Jonghyun placed on his lips.
"Was that a 'yes'?" Jonghyun whispered as they pulled apart.
"Yes, of course." Key smiled at the beaming older male, giving him one last peck before Jonghyun moved to sit back down near the bed, keeping their hands together.
"Jong?"
The older glanced at Key, "Bummie?" He retorted.
This made Key chuckle, "Thank you, for everything."
"Why are you thanking me, bum?"
"Just...for being you. Im grateful."
"Man, I have the sexiet yet most adorable boyfriend. How'd I get so lucky?" Jonghyun laughed, kissing the back of Keys hand, keeping it rested on his cheek right after.
"I guess being clumsy comes in handy." Key blushed.
Jonghyun chuckled, "True, or else I wouldnt have captured the heart of our university's hottest student."
"Yeah I guess you are one pretty lucky guy." Key laughed, agreeing jokingly.
"Will you give this lucky guy a reward?"
"Reward?"
"For being your night in shining armour." Jonghyun smirked.
Key laughed, dimples showing and making the older lose his train of thought. "I guess you deserve it...as if you havent been indulging." He rolled his eyes and smiled, his lips immediately attacking the olders. His world became lost again; happy Jonghyun was in his arms. If he could have Jonghyun with him, willingly loving him, Key felt like he could live with that. The feeling of warmth filling him as they would peck one another from time to time, slowly appreciating one anothers lips, never wanting this moment to ever end.
