So
laylah posted up some bits of various pieces she's working on right now, and I thought it was pretty cool, and so I'm going to do much the same thing. A handful of lines from a variety of pieces I'm working on. Some are original, some aren't.
Every Light Casts A Shadow
Behind him, the sailors shouted to each other, their words torn away by the swift wind that snapped the canvas sails in their rope bonds. Kain tilted his head back, staring up into the endless blue expanse of sky. Are you up there somewhere, Valvalicia, drifting on the whims of some wind? Or have you gone to Hell as a fiend rightly should? He thought he saw a hint of her shape in a rippling cumulus cloud, a suggestion of flowing hair and a voluptuous shape. Her lips had always been cool against his skin, the sense of air flowing all around them even in a closed room as she moved on top of him, her hair whipping in a vortex of wind.

Razor Edge
Kefka proceeded down the long aisle of crimson carpeting that ran the length of the throne room. He paused for a moment precisely halfway down the aisle, and then took a deliberate step forward, flaunting his breach of protocol by hesitating before bowing to the king.

Sea Breezes
Lulu stared across the sea, mesmerized by the rippling interaction of light and water. A very small part of her wanted to take a running leap off the edge of the cliff so she could see what it would be like to soar down to the sea and then float away, free of...well, everything, really. Was this how a High Summoner felt, standing in the Calm Lands with the Final Aeon waiting for his call?

Ray of Light
Living underground so long, you almost forget what the sun feels like. You really only see it when you go out for your turn at guard duty. You get tired of seeing cave walls and torches instead of grass and sunlight, even if it's safer that way.

Nothing More than Insects
"Halt!" The gate guard, who could not have been over sixteen, puffed up his chest and glared at her. "State your name and business!" The effect was somewhat ruined when his voice went through a two-octave crack.
Her voice, by contrast, was clear and carrying. "I am General Beatrix of the Alexandrian Army, and I come under flag of truce to discuss the matter of this confrontation." She angled the wooden pole she held to allow the white truce flag to fall free.

A Summoner's Faith
She sat quietly next to him, dipping her bare toes into the cool wavelets that lapped against the dock. There was no sign of Sin on the horizon, though she knew it had returned to Spira. Her father's Calm had not lasted after all.

Wyrdborn
The sudden silence was as painful to her magic-wracked mind as the maelstrom had been.

Untitled 1
"You're worthless." Ambria punched him in the shoulder good-naturedly. "You can recall blatherings about curiosities that may or may not exist but can't even tell me if a revolt was started by a noble or a commoner?"

So in other news, I got eaten alive by bunnies yesterday on my way home and started constructing that piece that involves Larsa and Balthier talking politics.
Also, Wyrdborn bunnies started gnawing on my brain-meats, and I figured out a piece of the puzzle as to how Lyrin gets the "gift" that Niouriki bestows on her. I'm always surprised at how much these characters have changed in the last six years; when I started this, Lyrin and Niouriki were Mary Sue and Gary Stu, and the villain was a straw-man at best. Now I like the way it's morphing and changing, though I think I may have to toss out almost all of what I have and rewrite it, save for a few scenes at the end. Also upon re-reading the untitled piece above, I think it has some actual potential, though it's far from my best work.
What would improve all of these pieces dramatically is if I could sit down with Cel or Sev and rip them apart until I know what's really happening. But I think I should maybe try to finish Every Light first, else I'll never do so.
Time to finish Phoenix Wright.
