White Christmas? Perhaps.

Okay, returning to the Thursday Thoughts since I am not in fact drowning under other obligations right now! (Hey look, NaNoWriMo is over and I start updating LJ again. Coincidence? I think not!)

So my Thursday Thought this year is kind of more of a rant, and has to do with the commercialization of Christmas. I mean, I'm all for presents. Presents are shiny and make people happy, and there's always the added bonus of getting stuff you might not otherwise be able to afford if friends or family are generous people. And I acknowledge that this time of year is when most retailers make, what, 75% of their revenue? (Figures are off the top of my head and are probably inaccurate.)

I'm fine with all of that. What I'm not fine with is when retailers start setting out the Christmas decorations and Christmas-specific merchandise in October. First of all, the holiday is two months away! Secondly, there are two other holidays in the middle there, namely Halloween and Thanksgiving, which get very little love compared to Christmas.

Also, the radio stations that play wall-to-wall Christmas music? Please. I can only hear the same songs so many times before I want to break something. Branching off of that rant, I specifically hate "remixed" versions of classic Christmas carols. Please stop trying to make it your own; you are taking a lovely song and butchering it. Just sing it as it was meant to be sung. Remixing "What Child Is This" into rap or some other godawful bit of idiocy is just...ugh. That's really all I have to say.

Well, all I have to say for today's Thursday Thought, anyway. I have lots more to say, but it'll be updated later.

My brain is still spongy from NaNo. And a snowstorm is headed for Chicago! I can hardly wait for my four-hour-long commute home tonight! Not to mention getting up earlier tomorrow so I can drive in through the snow with the stupid people! I'm not being even a little bit sarcastic. Really!

What the hell is it with people in Chicago not being able to drive in snow? I can (grudgingly) accept this bit of idiocy in Washington DC where they get "real" snow ("real" snow by DC definitions is "anything that sticks") once a year, but up here you have actual snowstorms. Multiple times per year. What is it that makes people so incredibly incompetent with snow? You just drive more carefully and don't go zooming down the freeway at six hundred miles an hour. It's not hard. Yet any snow up here triples everyone's commute time no matter where they are. I just don't get it.

Enough whining. Back to the salt mines...

P.S. celeloriel, first_seventhe, and evillotto, I'm going to make a NaNo filter for you guys where I can reply easily to your comments on Every Light. First chapters will be sent out tonight. Cel, do you still want me to print them for you or do you want MS word files that you can format to your heart's content and print yourself?
