Are you using a PC or a mac? On a PC running Windows 2K or XP, do the following:

To disable AIM sound ads, open in notepad:
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Add the following lines:
# AOL audio ad hosts
192.168.100.100 ar.atwola.com
192.168.100.100 empiremovies.com
192.168.100.100 xlonhcld.xlontech.net
192.168.100.100 VTOT.proxy.aol.com
192.168.100.100 ads.web.aol.com
192.168.100.100 ads.aol.com

Save the file.

To stop stuff from loading at startup, you can modify the registry. Do: Start->Run->regedit
Navigate to the following point in the register:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN
There will be a list of things that are run at startup. Find the one corresponding to the iPod/iTuner software and delete that key. (Click on it and press delete.)
You might also look for the key in:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN

If you're using a Mac or running Win9x, these directions won't really work, but I can probably figure out how to help you in either of those eventualities.

Doesn't modifying the registry make those programs not work, period?
