Hmm

Updating from a library computer very quickly, just wanted to record this lovely little instance.

Was sitting in my Modern China class discussing Communism and the Cultural Revolution. We were discussing why Culture, why is the problem revolving around Culture. I raised my hand and said that it's because culture is a more pervasive and effective method of controlling behaviour than any government could ever be, that for example it would be difficult to completely overthrow the governmental workings of the US and establish a full totalitarian state. Take for example the right of free speech--there'd be a fucking riot if you tried to take that away.

This guy started snickering while I was talking, and finally I just looked at him and said "All right, laugh at me. I'll just shut up now." We moved on.

After class, the guy came up to me and apologized, and said "When you first said it I thought you were ridiculous, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that all my counter examples just made your point stronger." So that was nice.

Then, on my way back from lunch, I ran into the prof, who apologized for the incident and said she felt I had made excellent points.

So I feel justified. Yay.
