It's been a good birthday weekend. (So convenient that my birthday will overlap with a long weekend most years.) I came home Friday and did a lot of cooking and prep for the party on Saturday, which included making like 3 dozen deviled eggs and a gallon of potato salad and paladin making a ton of twice-baked potatoes, then collapsed on the couch with
tuberose to play FF9 for a while until we collectively were falling asleep, so that was the end of that.
Saturday morning I went to get my hair done and then came home to clean up the house and finish doing party prep, like baking cakes and chopping watermelon. The party was a lot of fun--my friend Robbie gave me
Slash: Romance without Boundaries, which we played in a mix between the hardcore and casual modes, and we had a lot of fun with it.
stephen_poon was absolutely killing it with the Lord of the Rings cards. Much food was eaten, alcohol was consumed, and many conversations were had, which is about how these things usually go. It was so awesome to see everyone and have time to sit and chat about whatever. One of the things I like best about our group of friends here is that the conversation ranges from debates about politics to nitpicking aspects of video games and everything in between because that's just how we roll.
We wrapped that up around 2 am, and then yesterday paladin and I went to the local purveyor of home improvement things to get a large standing freezer for the basement (since apparently my in-laws are about to bestow upon us a substantial quantity of quality frozen meats) and then went to GameStop so he could acquire a new toy, now that he's done with Dragon Age: Inquisition (meaning I can now claim it) and had dinner out.
I did the Rising event in FF14 last night, and I am having way too many feelings.
I am not even going to lie: I cried at the developers' room. I love the callback to FF4, and I love how intent and genuine the whole thing sounded. I realize there is a whole category of corporate communications training that is basically "how to sound genuine when you're being corporate" but I am ignoring that for now because it just. Wow. I had the feeling that the developers are at least as invested in this game as I am, and I never expected to be this invested in an MMO, and I am just. Pleased as punch that it exists and that I can play it.
Today has been a very quiet day so far - I spent about an hour talking to
celeoriel about worldbuilding for a variety of things I am working on, including the thing I need to figure out somehow before November (I am now substantially closer to what I need to have in order for that to be functional enough for NaNo.) And now I'm going to spend the rest of my holiday weekend playing video games.
