Saying Goodbye to Someone I Never Met

Oct 14, 2014 20:10

Last night we went up to Wisconsin to attend a funeral for paladin's grandmother. It was very strange and awkward for me to be there; I'm part of the family now, but I only really know my in-laws well. There were a handful of other people I met at the wedding, but I had only talked to them briefly, so I was basically in a sea of people who could identify me as paladin's new wife but whom I couldn't place on a mental relationship map, and so I was making small talk for hours. It was pretty exhausting. (Also strange because, you know, attending a funeral for someone I had never met.)

But of course the point was to be present to support the family I did know well. I had lovely conversations with some of paladin's cousins, and I don't think I embarrassed myself particularly, but good holy God I'm completely out of social points. (I can, and do, enjoy large social gatherings--but typically when I know most of the people already. I love being with people, but being with people when there's a socially acceptable way to perform and that way doesn't particularly involve showcasing your own personality is exhausting. Plus, we weren't expecting it to go as late as it did, so I was basically performing socialize checks with penalties for having only had one meal and totally insufficient caffeine.

We ended up getting home at almost 11pm, at which point we had to unload the car of some of the furniture and accessories we had inherited/chosen and then shove some fast food down our throats so we could just go to bed and be up in time for work today. So yeah. I'm pretty tired.

Otherwise it was a good weekend; we went to a gathering at
spreadnparanoia's place and then spent Sunday unpacking and clearing out part of our storage unit. All that's left in there now is a mattress we're going to throw out, and a couple of boxes full of childhood mementos that my mom foisted off on me and I'm unwilling to let go. My stuffed animals are serious business, okay. serious business. We also ordered a pile of bookshelves and a pantry cabinet, so we can finally unpack the end of the boxes. Just in time for our housewarming party! It's like I planned it that way! I'm looking forward to having the whole house unpacked. Most of the public areas are at least in presentable format, but there's more stuff to be done (forever more stuff to be done.) Still, I'll get there.

I also got some time to play FF14 with rpgfreak and sped through like six levels as my conjurer, which is awesome because while I don't mind doing duty roulette on low levels generally, it's more fun with a friend. So I'm almost to the point of getting my level 30 achievement for all mage classes. I enjoy this game so much.
