Dean Smith, former coach of UNC and Olympic basketball, died Saturday.
Apart from his excellence as a coach, Smith helped his players succeed in life, and insisted that they put school first. He awarded the first athletic scholarship given to a black athlete at UNC, and was a genuine force in the Civil Rights movement.
We are less than we were with his passing, but his legacy will live on as a counterpoint to the crap infesting college athletics today.
