rain and lilacs, work and life

May 11, 2007 11:29

It's raining. As soon as I saw the storm clouds gathering I lwft my cubicle and went outside to bask in the impending gloom. I love the period right before a storm, when the air is heavy and the wind picks up and the world hovers in anticipation. If I could I would go outside again now and dance in the downpour, but that's not really acceptable office behavior, so I'm restraining myself.

While I was outside I found rows of flowering lilac bushes. Some of the blooms were gracious enough to come inside with me, so I have a small spray on my desk by my computer. If I were at Smith now I would have twined them in my hair, but again, wearing fresh-picked flowers in one's hair isn't office okay.

Clearly, this means that I'm not meant to work in an office. I need a job where dancing in thunderstorms and braiding flowers in my hair will be okay.

I'm looking into being a travel guide for when I'm finished with the program in Italy. It might be the perfect fit, or at least a much closer fit than what I'm currently doing.

Though I admit, I still get the urge to abandon the world and sit on a mountaintop and meditate. I need to get back to the spiritual life, and office life is pretty antithetical to that, at least for me.

And on that note...the rain has stopped falling out, at least for now, and I should get back to my work.

Anon.
