Irish bynames, a Sims Project [WIP]

Jan 10, 2013 21:05

Changing how I do last names because I've got an almost fresh neighborhood (only one group of peasants made, I can handwave if they're the only people out of sync with the naming structure).

Some ideas about clan names/household names here (descriptive bynames will be given to sims after they're created, so the household name should be based on those criteria and be used as "default" surnames for sims who don't have a byname yet and who I don't want to give patronymics/matronymics for some reason).

PROBLEMS:
  • I've already established that my universe is neither patrilineal nor matrilineal nor is lineage always traced through non-binary people or the person giving birth or the person who impregnated the person giving birth I'm using Other Things k so I'm going to need genitive cases for "female" names and matronymics oh shit. I may give up on the genitive thing?
  • Leanbh is Irish for child but I don't know if it works for the period but not everyone is going to be an "inghean" or a "mac" so ah.
  • In order to save myself from matronymics and patronymics I may actually use household names as a more typical surname even though that's not historical accurate, k.
  • Yeah no the way these patronymics and clan names are formed is clearly sexist (women are "daughters of a male descendant of such-and-such" while men are "a male descendant of such-and-such" and that's not gonna fly with my sims) so I'm going to save myself from the gaelic and this mess and just simplify it all excuse me.
SOURCES:

Irish and Manx Names. Good overall page, along with some "quick & easy" guides, which are good, because the only language I'm worse than with Irish is French and I do not understand why I chose this language to fuck about with.

Common masculine descriptive bynames. Very useful.
Common feminine descriptive bynames. Sidenote, I may take their use of "masculine/feminine" literally. Or maybe not. Still thinking.

Descriptive Gaelic. Most of these are Scotts Gaelic.

Common masculine given names and their genitives.
All of the comparable guides for feminine names are broken links rn.
