Gotta Have Friends ~ An RP

(Uhh..cuz I need to distract myself...and Larry needs a friend)

Larry rubbed his brow as he stood outside of a bar. It was Friday night and he wasn't in the mood to sit home alone. Sam had gone to Joey's for the night and as Larry had been temporarily banned from CJ's...he really had nowhere to go.

However...he really was trying hard to keep his promise to Sam that he was cutting back on drinking. At least it was his understanding of the agreement. Sam's may have been closer to the "no drinking" side of things.

"Can't make up your mind?" A voice asked behind him. He smiled as he recognized the voice and turned around to face Jackie.

"Ms. Merrifield," he greeted.

"Mr. Paul," she replied.

"Are you going in, then?" She nodded towards the door. "If not, move out of the way so I can." A smirk was planted on her lips. He chuckled and stepped aside.

"I haven't decided."

"I guess I'll see you inside if you decide so," she said. She slipped past him and walked inside without a further word. His brows rose and he watched after her. The woman had always been good at the intrigue thing. And really, what could a cold Coke hurt?

He grabbed the door and went inside, then found her at the bar and sat himself beside her. She accepted her drink from the bartender and took a sip without looking at him. "I was hoping you'd choose wisely."

"This isn't quite fair, Larry," Jackie shook her head at him as she pushed her empty glass up the bar.

"What isn't?" He was smiling, his body on the stool angled towards hers.

"I've had two drinks now and you're still sipping at that Coke."

"I would love to join you, but I'm being...health conscious," he nodded and tapped his chest.

"You always have excuses," she grinned at him.

"I do?"

"I seem to remember you excusing yourself from my couch awhile back by saying you should get home to your son."

"I do have a son," he nodded.

"Who's a teenager if I recall."

"Yes...well..."

She laughed and picked up her fresh drink. "I won't twist your arm into sleeping with me, Larry. And I won't be offended if you're not interested."

His mouth opened and closed a bit wordlessly with that. He picked up his hand and pointed at her, as if that would help the words appear sooner. She just watched him, amused, and waited. He kept it up a it longer before words came out. "I never said I didn't want to."

A brow slowly rose and her ankle softly brushed his. "No?"

He watched her closely and shook his head. "No."

"Is it a religious thing?"

"No," he smirked and moved in a bit closer.

"Ethics? Don't dip your pen in the company ink?" Her fingers brushed against his atop of the bar.

He laughed at that one. A good laugh. "No, that's...not one I've been known to follow. And technically - you're not company ink."

"Well, some don't mix with other lawyers."

"I like lawyers," he nodded, curling his fingers around hers.

"Hmm...then what could it be?" She let her hand slide further into his. "Another woman?"

A beat was skipped there before he answered an uncertain, "No."

"Aha." She nodded and started to pull her hand away. "If you're involved, I'm not going to-"

He held onto her hand and didn't let her escape much further. "I'm not," he assured her gently. "I've just...been trying to figure things out. She's...she's not an option anymore."

"Hmmm," she nodded and studied him. "Well, if you need help sorting things out, I have no qualms being used in such a manner." A slow smile returned to her lips.

****

"Did that help any?" She asked, brushing a hand against his chest. He pulled her closer and sighed.

"I'm not sure." He wrapped his arm around her waist and held her against himself. "Let me take a nap and we'll give it another try."

She laughed and relaxed against him. "Anything I can do to help a friend."
