If life were hard, then it wouldn't be easy

There is something about Provo that makes it so easy for me to hate it, from its myriad jewelry stores to its herds of pedestrians who walk to church every Sunday. The reason why this place deserves to be the object of my loathing manifested itself today in the bathroom at church.

I went into the Women's Restroom after sacrament meeting. As I walked towards the mirror to make sure I didn't have any more dead skin on my hair (the weather here just dries out my scalp, and makes me dislike this place even more), some girl who I assume I had met before, comes up to me and says, "Oh, I didn't know you're engaged!" I looked at her with an expression I can only describe as pure bewilderment, but she didn't seem to notice. She went on to ask, "Where are you getting married?" I put on a pleasant smile and thought that this person was actually genuinely interested in my marriage.

I figured that this girl really wanted to get to know me so I said, "Mt. Timpanogas Temple, on Dec. 21st."

She didn't look at me as she pulled some paper towels from the dispenser near the sink. "Oh, so are you or the groom from around here?"

"No, we're not."

"Why are you getting married here then?"

"Well, it turns out that--"

"Oh hey so how are you doing? Are you excited about teaching sunday school today?!" She said turning enthusiastically to the next girl who walked into the bathroom. I had my mouth half open, as I still had been in mid-sentence, when she so quickly forgot my existence. I immediately felt like an idiot, that I had foolishly opened myself up to someone who didn't give a damn about me.

The superficiality here is terrible. For me, it's (superficiality) something of dishonesty, and it reeks with falsehood and leaves those who see it for what it is with contempt for individuals who use it. I should have told the girl that my wedding was none of her business and that I didn't know who in the world she was.

She didn't care about my wedding or why we were having it here. So why did she ask? She should've just let me leave the bathroom with the same dignity with which I had entered it.
