Panic before the storm
Cassidy readjusted her tie for what must have been the fifth time in as many minutes while she watched a flustered Andy hurry about the romantically lit dining room. The brunette was unnecessarily straightening the white lacy table cloth and elegant silver candlesticks.
Caroline was practicing with the ten people orchestra in the family room so it was up to her twin to calm the quivering mess that was Andy before their mother was due to arrive home. The red head glanced at her watch and realized she only had fifteen minutes.
Sighing, Cassidy stilled Andy with a pair of steady hands on the brunette’s bare shoulders. At fifteen she stood level with Andy and four years on the swim team had given her the strength to steer the reluctant brunette away from her pacing path. Nervous hazel eyes met her own blue ones as she turned Andy to face her.
‘Ok, calm down and breathe. Everything looks great.’ The red head soothed as she guided her into a chair. Andy was close to hyperventilating and Cassidy didn’t want her to pass out on what she hoped would be a very special night for all of them.
The brunette took a deep breath attempting to slow her heart rate back to normal as the younger woman sat in the chair next to hers. ‘I’m sorry Cass, I guess I’m just a bit nervous.’
You think? Cassidy thought with an understanding smile looking at the little box in Andy’s hand, knowing how long the brunette had been preparing for this day.
‘I just want things to be perfect.’
‘I know and they are so just relax and we’ll-’
‘What if I’m making a big mistake?’
‘What?!’ Cassidy half shouted, fearing whiplash as she looked up quickly to stare at the older woman.
Andy’s eyes were panic filled as she babbled unaware of Cassidy’s shell shocked expression, ‘We’re perfectly happy the way we are right? It wouldn’t mean anything in New York anyway and your mum’s been married twice, what if she’s sick of marriage? I don’t want to ruin what we have and that’s what I’ll be doing if she says no.’
‘Andy listen to me, you guys have been together for five years. She’s committed to you with or without the ring. Marriage will just be an extension of that commitment.’ She reassured taking Andy’s hand in her own as she looked into worried brown eyes.
‘She’s going to say yes because she loves you and so what if New York doesn’t recognize your marriage? We’ll recognize it and that’s all that matters.’ Cassidy finished sincerely, determined to get through to the other woman.
There was a moment of silence before Andy finally spoke in a more confident tone.
‘You’re right, screw the rest of the world. I’m proposing.’
‘That’s what I’m talking about.’ Cassidy joked, glad that Andy’s freak out was coming to a close.
‘What would I do without you guys?’
‘I’ll dread to think.’
The brunette laughed and made to stand up. Cassidy watched Andy smooth down and readjust her red strapless gown and thought how happy she was to be wearing a tux for the evening. She remembered the brunette trying on and discarding dozens of dresses before she’d finally decided on the one she wanted, having dragged both Cassidy and Caroline around the stores.
The younger woman smiled, knowing how important this day was to Andy since she never usually spent a large amount of time clothes shopping but had taken the whole day to look for the perfect outfit for this occasion.
‘Your mum should be here any minute, now how do I look?’ The older woman asked, giving a mock twirl in front of the red head receiving a giggle in return.
Cassidy thought Andy’s heavy red satin floor length gown looked stunning on her slender frame and was glad that the brunette had decided on four inch black strappy stiletto heels instead of red ones so that it did not over do the red. Andy had chosen to wear her hair down and it fell in silky curls over bare ivory shoulders and Cassidy caught a glimpse of silver hooped earrings concealed in the cascading brown waves. The whole look screamed elegance.
‘You look Beautiful, but I thought you was going to wear your hair up so that mum could see your tat-’
‘I changed my mind, I wanted to surprise her with it later.’ Andy replied hastily. She could feel the blush creeping its way up her neck, knowing that Cassidy would catch on to her meaning.
‘Oh,’ the red head replied with a knowing smirk making Andy blush harder.
I guess after dinner me and Cara should make ourselves scarce.
‘So we’re doing this.’ The brunette stated with confidence, the tremor in her voice barely noticeable. Cassidy decided to let her change the subject, not particularly wanting to have the image of her mum and Andy having sex in her head.
‘Well technically, you are doing this but yes we are or otherwise Cara will most probably kill you since we’ve had to hide it from Mum for the last month.’
‘It hasn’t been that bad.’ Andy replied.
‘You try having the suspicious glare on you for weeks. I swear Andy even though Mum’s been busy this month what with Valentines Day tomorrow, she still manages to give us The Look. You know it’s hard to keep any secret from her let alone something this big when you’re faced with The Look.’
‘Aww poor baby, I’ll make sure to get you and your sister treats when this is over.’ Andy mocked, laughing at Cassidy’s exaggerated pout as she ruffled the younger woman’s short auburn locks. The red head had discarded her usual black spiral earring in favour of a smarter looking silver ear cuff which complemented her black tuxedo perfectly.
‘You better since I have to play waiter, why couldn’t you get Cara to do it instead?’ Cassidy joked, absently fidgeting with the bow tie at her neck.
‘Darling, the last I checked you didn't like the piano and Caroline wouldn’t appreciate being in a suit as much as you do.’ Andy said reaching up to straighten the red head’s tie.
‘Hmm, you’ve got a point.’ Cassidy replied with a grin as she watched Andy glance at the clock before making a move towards the door.
‘Cass, I’m going to check on Chef Paul so can you give me a heads up when your mum arrives?’
‘Oh so now I’m playing butler as well.’ The red head sighed with mock irritation, trying unsuccessfully to hide her smile.
Andy’s travelling laughter was her only response as she watched the brunette stroll into the kitchen.
