Blue Peter Concert - 'And over the wing there is a gun'

Feb 05, 2011 20:46

Back on Friday 21 January 2011 CG and I attended a concert of Blue Peter and Chalk Circle at the Mod Club in Toronto.

Thanks to marimarimac for looking after L and providing us crash space on Friday night. You are a sweetheart.

Back around 1980 I used to play Blue Peter on my radio show at CFRC, Queen's University Radio. I really like their military songs.  They have one about being in a heavy bomber called 'Radio Silence' and another 'Take me to War'  The later song I play on the car radio as I crest the hill of the superhighway just before Pennsic.

It was really cool to hear them finally in concert.  They had broken up in the early 80s but recently have reformed for some concerts in the GTA. I did not realize it until I was at the show that hearing them in concert play either Radio Silence or Take me to War was on my bucket list. Fortunately they played both songs back to back.

Lots of older middle aged people at the concerts. What the heck are they doing there? ;)

Here are some You Tube videos from the concert including Radio SIlence, Take me to War and the joint encore of the Velvet Underground's 'Sweet Jane'.

BTW here are words for 'Take me to War'

Where is the voice that left me behind?
In a darkened room, at the window
Where is the girl who led me to shore?
Eyes to the sea, knocking at my door
There is tomorrow, head on my pillow
Breath in my arms, voice in my ear
Where is the treasure I buried upstream?
Left on a map from a midnight dream

Come on take me to war
Take me to war
I’m ready for invasion
Take me to shore
Need no persuasion

Then I hear that hollow voice
Throat is thirsty, head like straw
Won’t you sway, sway, sway in the wind now
Looking out to the sea
We’ll defend this field for a thousand years

Come on take me to war
Take me to war
I’m ready for invasion
Take me to shore
Need no persuasion at all

Watch the sun sinking down, down
Watch it melt in the water
Now tell me who’s that girl who holds the fire?
Throat is rusted, rusted
Smell the distant smoke
The flames are warm, but the night will be cold

Come on take me to war
Take me to war
I’m ready for invasion
Take me to shore
Need no persuasion

Take me to war
Take me to war
I’m ready for invasion
Take me to shore
I need no persuasion

Take me to war
Take me to war
Take me to war

Take me to shore
Take me to shore
Take me to shore
