finfin loaned me his copy of Gankutsuou: the Count of Monte Cristo, and I just finished watching the first disk. I must say that I am enjoying it immensely. Lavishly illustrated, it is a faithful retelling of the Dumas classic, with two major differences ( Read more... )

Reign the Conqueror was an awesome idea with stomach-churningly awful visuals. So...it's a trade off.

Only the people were disgusting--there were some other visuals that were fairly nice. I do recall the love scene between Alexander and the Babylonian princess just being unbearable to watch, so, point taken.

Gankutsuou definitely does not suffer from this problem, however. Aside from a few unimpressively-rendered CG cut scenes, it is all quite lavish.
