A Longer Author’s Note for So Spoke the Wanderer and the Whole of the Journeys ‘Verse
So many of the thoughts, ideas, and characters mentioned in this story and ‘verse belong to other people. I claim no ownership, only adoration. In writing this story, in creating this ‘verse, I was more intent on writing a love letter. It’s addressed to the genres of Fantasy and Sci-Fi, to all the books, television shows and movies, which have shaped my own childhood and life. It’s influenced by all the stories which tell the tale of a Wanderer. There are direct quotes from movies and books, there are ideas clearly inspired by the works of J.M. Barrie, J.R.R. Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Jim Butcher, Lynn Flewllng, C.S. Lewis and so many others. There are themes, like the journey of self, the process of grief, that are universal.
Writing this story was a long process and I honestly could not have done it without the help and support of
skylilies and
uniformly. Kay, who had to listen to me bitch about this fic for months, and was such a support system. Nat, who along with writing her own Leckie epic, also had to listen to me bitch and was always a source of joy.
canadasuperhero did the beta work for me and any and all amazing and remaining mistakes are mine.
skew_whiff and
augustbird both cheered me and Nat on during this whole process and they both deserve their own recognition.
uniformly and I were in this Epic Leckie writing thing together. She came up with the idea of us doing our own mini big bang. We cheered each other on and made mixes for each other's fics.
The mix she was kind enough to bestow upon me is located
here. Go check and out and hopefully love it as much as I do!
Back when I first started writing this mess, I promised
skylilies I would do a mix post of my writing soundtrack. Below are 10 of my favorite tracks. If I posted the whole writing mix I would probably break the internet. (It’s over nine hours.) I hope everyone enjoys and as always, if you like what you hear, support the artists.
1. Journey of the Magi by Frank Turner
Balthazar rode for seven long years,
Eastwards and far, he followed his star,
And it brought him here.
To a stable in ruins in some backwater town,
To a virgin defiled, no king but a child, too small for a crown.
He sang "I could have lived with my Gods as a Persian prince,
I could've played safe,
But in the end the journeys brought joys that outweigh the pain."
Paupers and kings, princes and thieves,
Singers of songs, righters of wrongs, be what you believe.
So saddle your horse and shoulder your load,
Burst at the seams, be what you dream, and take to the road.
2. Sorcerer by Stevie Nicks
I'm tired
I'm thirsty
I'm wild-eyed
In my misery
Timeless in your finery
It's a high price
For your luxury
3. All Eyes On Me by Goo Goo Dolls
But your eyes look away
It's so hard to be someone
Strung out from today
And all that you knew slips away
And you hide in your room
And the lights turn away
And you move from the truth
It's all so far from you
4. Under the Milky Way by The Church
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
And it's something quite peculiar
Something that's shimmering and white
It leads you here despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight
5. God Says Nothing Back by The Wallflowers
God bless the void
Of my daydreams
Back in the snow
Making angel wings
Slow motion dancing lights have gone
Sail beneath the burning yellow sun
I'm calling out to the deep ends of my bones
Time says nothing back
But I told you so
I told you so
6. Floating in the Balance by Sarah Jarosz
Going through the motions
And acting out this part
Sifting through the pages
Of the life that I can start
Calloused fingers fumble
On the boardwalk of my muse
Feeling fit to crumble
Some days I wake up with the blues
7. Months and Years by Abandon Kansas
Tell me that I’m not treading water here
A couple of months have turned into several years
And the plans that we made and promised the world
Would be done, have just begun
8. Heartlines by Florence + the Machine
On the sea, on the sea and land over land.
Creeping and crawling like the sea over sand.
Still I follow heartlines on your hand.
And there’s fantasy, there’s fallacy, there’s tumbling stone.
Echoes of a city that’s long overgrown.
Your heart is the only place that I call home,
I cannot be returned.
9. Unsung Psalm by Tracy Chapman
Do you live by the book do you play by the rules?
Do you care what is thought by others about you?
If this day is all that is promised to you
Do you live for the future, the present, the past?
10. Miles Davis & The Cool by The Gaslight Anthem
Don't wait too long to come home.
My how the years and our youth pass on.
Don't wait too long to come home,
I will leave the front light on.
If the night is all wrong,
Don't wait too long
