“Well damn,” Jordan muttered. “I’m actually going to have to give Merl-Francis some credit. Seem like that boy’s done got some taste. Good to see both him and Gene grew out of that frat boy phase.”

I really, truly, tried to write Sledge as something other than shy and adorbs but I just couldn't do it. I just always think "aw, shucks" and "woobie" when writing him, even though I am fairly aware he was most badass.

There will def. be more backstory on the frat boy phase. After all, someone eventually has to pick up Babe's phone call.

And thank you, bb! I just, I REALLY missed writing Babe. And I just feel like he meshes so well with all of TP boys, and I've been wanting to be Sledge and Babe in a fic together for ages. So yesterday I finally decided to do just that.

“The Cult of Haldane, you mean?” Babe asked. “The school’s never going to let him go, since his class graduation rate is higher than the whole of the state.”

i really adore the idea of sledge substituting (because he is adorable and it fits), and haldane being this epicly great teacher -- because it's so fitting for haldane and his natural tendency to just get everyone respect him and to want to do their best for him, and i could see all his kids having that same mentality of him as a father figure as we see in the war.

Babe shrugged. “I don’t know if you’d call it right but he did down two whole meat lovers pizzas yesterday and then ate half a cake and half a bottle of TUMS.”
and you always have little gems like this. god, your snafu is just perfect. and ridiculous.

I really feel there's an intersting dynamic when you compare the Sledge/Snafu and Roe/Babe relationships. To me, Babe and Snafu are the loose cannons with the smart mouths and the attitude. Sledge and Roe can both snap, lose their temper, lose their minds, but they still have a sort of silent calm and stillness about them. So I like working the four characters and two relationships around each other. And then theres the whole part where Sledge is Snafu's anchor and vice-versa, and in "Bastogne" Babe sort of acts like that for Roe, esp towards the end. IDK, I have lots of thoughts about it tall.

Haldane's friends, at least as it's written in Sloan's book, thought he'd probably be a history teacher or something one day, and that idea really struck me so I wanted to carry it on somewhere. And I think Sledge is the perfect sort of person to find some sort of solace in learning/teaching.

i so totally agree with everything you've said there --- and find those dynamics really fascinating (especially the sledge & roe similarities, because they ARE the kind that can snap and lose their tempers, but there is a ...naturally gentler/softer curve to their natures than snafu or babe. and i think that roe would have reacted similarly to sledge, had he been in the pacific theatre.) i'd love to see a bit of sledge & roe interaction o: and you know, in kind of the same vein as anchors, snafu and roe both look out for the humanity of sledge & babe, too -- snafu trying to get sledge to not do the desensitized things he himself does, and roe slightly desperately trying to comfort babe after julian's death even though there's not much he can do or say. THERE'S WAYS IN WHICH EACH ONE OF THEM PARALLELS ONE OF THE OTHER FOUR, which is fascinating

And that is why I weep tears of bitter sadness that there is a serious lack of fic involving all of them. Now, granted, there's more out there than, like, 6 months ago, but still. Even if you want to get basic about it, there are two red-heads, and two cajuns, from two different but semi-parallel fandoms. WORK WITH IT, FANDOM. It can't just be me, poutmeter and a handful of other people who see it.
