Masters

I have already went through the entire first season of Masters of Sex
in a mere weekend.

I will admit first going into it I thought it would be much like Mad Men,
but dare I say this show is much, much smarter than one of my favorite t.v. shows,
blasphemous, forgive me Don Draper.

Mad Men is a truly beautiful, very cinematic show, especially for a cable series, however
even with strong women like Peggy and Joan, it is still a very male/androcentric show, and Don's character is always doing everything on shear impulse, nothing is ever really thought all the way through, he is more like me than I like to admit, he lets his emotions get the best of him in almost every way. More of a creative.

While the majority of the main characters in Masters of Sex are more three dimensional, their actions are more thought out, and their dialogues in the show are more logical, themes are more powerful in a lot of ways than some presented in Mad Men.
I suppose because the entire series is based around a Medical/Academic environment opposed to a creative/business driven ad agency, has a lot to do with it.

Masters of Sex might not be as glamorous as Mad Men, but the subject material is more thought provoking, and yes, there is shock value in there, Sex studies in the 1950's with human subjects, ha.
But, I really find the female characters much more powerful and hold very influential roles in this series, they are all fairly smart and not as flat or 1 dimensional as the large majority of the women roles in Mad Men. Female doctors, research assistants, educated receptionists that are always making very strong comments about the true role of women in the society and how things need to change, and even very savvy prostitutes.

Yes, I will be sticking to William Masters & Virginia Johnsons' series for the long haul.
