When Christmas Is Over, Save Some Christmas Cheer...

Dec 26, 2007 10:01

Well, it's hard to keep Christmas cheer when you're stuck going to work the day after. (Yeah, can't tell you how much that sucks) But I had a nice Christmas and got many nice things, including clothes, earrings and games to name a few. Brian liked his gifts which made me happy. Everyone seemed to like the gifts I gave them, which I was glad to see since I do put a lot of thought into the gifts I give.

Also saw a movie on Friday, Sweeney Todd, of course. Being a musical freak I wasn't about to pass that one up. It being about a serial killer, starring Johnny Depp was the things that attracted Brian the most, and he was eager to see it as well.

Although I was a big musical freak back in high school (I'm still a fan, but not nearly as...rabid) and a fan of Sondheim's work as well, I was not overly familiar with this particular show. I knew, of course, what the story was about, but I didn't really know the plot or the ending or any of the major stuff. I was somewhat vaugely familiar with the music, because my friend had the original cast album and I would put it in the shuffle along with my Jekyll and Hyde and The Scarlet Pimpernel (and Les Mis and who knows what else anymore) Anyway, mostly the only song I really remembered very well was: "A Little Priest" because that was the one that amused us the most and we played it all the time. The other thing that I remembered was the creepy "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" was freaked me out every time I heard it.

Thankfully, no ballad in this movie.

In short, it really was a great movie. Burton's direction was definitely creepy. I was really impressed with the vocals of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Sondheim does NOT write music that's easy to sing, but they were wonderful. The kid playing Toby also stood as a great young talent. Alan Rickman, of course, is always awesome.

If you don't know what Sweeney Todd is about I'll give you a brief summary. A barber named Benjamin Barker was sent away for life for a crime he didn't commit because this perverted judge wanted his wife. So now he returns to London and seeks revenge on him. So he goes back to his old place on Fleet Street and meets Mrs. Lovetts, who runs a very unsuccessful meat pie shop. So Mr. Todd starts to "shave" again with his very sharp razor, and suddenly Mrs. Lovetts' is running a successful meat pie shop. Hmmm...

The feel of the movie was definitely creepy and haunting. I thought the dilluded colors really added to the feel. Was there blood? Oh yeah. I had to look away more than once, but it's really more for show than gore. It's kind of part of the story, really.

And of course the music is great, but I already knew that, even if I didn't know the lyrics or anything.

Overall, awesome movie. I think this movie would appeal to people even if they aren't fans of musicals. (If they don't mind a bloody and twisted plot that is.) I really don't have any complaints on it.

9.5 out of 10. (Hey, nothing's every perfect.)
