Spider-man, Spider-man, does whatever a spider can

So on Friday, like a million billion other people, I went to see Spider-man 3.

Spider-man is by and large my favorite superhero. I loved the first two movies and was very much looking forward to this one. Unfortunately this movie was a big let down. It was not as good as the previous too and was quite disappointing.

There is just too much going on in this movie. Spider-man is dealing with his new black costume, Harry/Green Goblin, Sandman, Eddie Brock/Venom, and his relationship with Mary Jane. Definitely at least one "plot" too many.

The black costume stuff was cool. Venom was way, way underused. The relationship stuff was just okay. The Harry/Green Goblin part was well done. The Sandman thing was totally, totally pointless. First of all, the guy playing Sandman, Thomas Haden Church, was so wooden it was almost painful when he was on screen. And his whole story was just boring and not necessary. It would have been a better movie without all that crap bogging it down.

Gwen Stacy, and her father the police chief (played by James Cromwell) were there, but it was all kind of strange and also not really needed. James Cromwell didn't even have a lot of screen time at all, so I don't know why they even bothered.

I could have done without the Mary Jane singing, and there was a Spider-man dance sequence at one point (I kid you not) that was funny, but kind of odd.

The performences, otherwise, were good. Topher Grace really stood out as Eddie Brock/Venom. He stole every scene he was in. And of course there's R.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. Always hilarious.

But overall there was just too much going on in this movie for it to be good. So much was not needed. There wasn't enough of the GOOD stuff, especially Venom. Way, way underused. Such a shame, because there really was so much potentional here. After the last two films it really hurts to admit that this is definitely the weak link in the trilogy.

I don't want to sound overly negative. The film is worth watching. Some parts do drag, that is for sure. But what's good is good and worth seeing. It's just that it could have been so much better. And seeing all the potentional it could have had is hurting the movie as a whole.
