So after an ungodly number of hours for a pre-final boss first playthrough, I finally broke down and beat FFXII. I had not done all the things I wanted to but I couldn't take it anymore. I was getting bored and I had to see how it all wrapped up.
I was a good 14 levels above the final-final boss (we all know how these games operate) so I felt like I was good to go. Had no problems with the previous boss, but the last dude killed several characters a few times! I was shocked! In the end I used Quickenings to beat his ass.
But the "last area" was truly the shortest "last area" in any FF game ever. No long path to tread with several other bosses and super hard enemies in your way. Not that I'm complaining.
Lots of story at the end, which was good. All the stuff leading up to beating the last boss was all well and good. I liked it. I even liked the stuff that happened right after beating the boss, the "aftermath", if you will.
But the ending itself...was okay. Lacking. Definitely lacking. I waited through all the credits expecting more, but there wasn't. I actually shut the system off with the words "Well that sucked."
Harsh words, and it's not really true. The ending didn't "suck". It was slightly disappointing and not overall fantastic, but it didn't suck. Definitely not the worst FF ending ever. It was a better ending than X and VII. It was about on par with IX, which had a decent, if not everything you would want, ending. Not Final Fantasy game has ever had an ending that compared to VIII, which had an amazing ending, and I don't think any of the games ever will at this rate.
I don't know if I'm going to go back and finish all the stuff I wanted to finish in the game right away. Probably not. But I guess I'll get there eventually.
Overall though, I really did love the game. I really shouldn't have been afraid of hating it.
