How NOT To Get A Wii

Nov 20, 2006 10:42

No luck getting a Wii this weekend. If we were crazy we could have gotten one, but we decided not to be totally crazy.

We went up to visit our friends Nick and Teresa this weekend. They live upstate. We had a plan to try and get a Wii. After all, we had heard it wouldn't be *too* hard to get one. Not anything like a PS3.

So Nick and I head to one Walmart, while Brian goes to meet with Teresa and they go head to another one. There was already a line of more people than they had systems. Dammit. Brian and Teresa call two others. Same story. God dammit. We go back to Nick's, Brian and Teresa go out to get food (we had already gotten Wendy's). Back at Nick's we brainstorm. Where could they possibly getting Wii's? Forget Best Buy and Target. We had driven by Circuit City. They must be getting Wii's. We call. They are, but they won't tell us how many. We call two Toys R Us stores which say they may have some left over from their pre-orders. Brian and Teresa return and we decide to go scope things out and see what the scene is like.

First we go to Circuit City. No line there. They were getting 30. We thought about starting up a line outside, but it was cold, and it really didn't seem worth it to any of us. They weren't having a midlight launch (otherwise it would have been a no brainer) so we decided to wake-up early the next morning and swing by to get on line. Next we went to the mall, where there was a Target. A small line had already formed there. Finally we went to Toys R Us, because I wanted to get some games anyway. We chatted with the guy working there but he wasn't really sure how many they'd have left after pre-orders.

Then we went back home. The plan was the boys would get up early the next morning (at 5) and go to Circuit City to get in line. Surely that would be fine.

So we play Scene It and watch some Are You Afraid of the Dark and turn in rather early. Their kitty Asuka choose to sleep on my legs. She's very cute, but I was afraid to move! Anyway, at 5 Nick wakes Brian up. They leave. I go back to bed. They return a little after 7 with no Wiis. There was a line already at Circuit City with not too many people in it, but one guy was planning to buy six. WTF?! I don't even know if that was allowed, but if it was, that is NOT fair. It should be one per customer everywhere because you know what? The odds that that guy actually needs 6 for Christmas presents for people is very low. Bullshit. Thing that made me mad #1. Fine. Oh well, no Wiis for us. The boys lay down again.

Twenty minutes later Brian is up at the computer and is on this Wii seeker website. A nearby Toys R Us (not the one we were at last night) is getting 84 Wiis?! They had passed by earlier and there was no line. They go out again. I go back to sleep for a little while. Then I get up, play some DS. Time ticks by. 9. 10. Then 11. The store opened at 10. Surely they would be back by now if they didn't have a Wii.

Finally they return. They have Toys R Us bags, but alas, no Wiis. Inside were Zelda games (which will shortly be sold out almost everywhere anyway) and an extra controller. Apparently the store only had *12*. *12*. And they were 15 and 16 in line. Most of the other people in line were scary, including one guy who sold his spot in line for $50. That was $50 he could now put in his crack pipe. The guys were kicking themselves for not offering the $50 first. But it gets worse. Two people at the front of the line were loudly talking about how they didn't really want the Wii?! WTF?! It was some lady and her best friend's husband! And when they got inside his credit card wouldn't even go through! This was the point where I would have held up my American Express card and said, "Um, hi, I'm not a deadbeat, I'll take it." Sadly Mr. Reject found a card that actually worked. Thing that pissed me off #2. Assholes. Thanks for taking systems from people who actually want them. Go fuck off and die.

At this point I'm so pissed I don't even want a god damn Wii anymore. I really hate the video game companies I really do. First of all, they shouldn't release a product if they don't have nearly enough to meet demand. Especially Sony, who really fucks with people, and on purpose. Secondly, Ebay and other online auction sites should not allow anyone to post an auction for a video game system that just came out until like 3 months later. That would probably cut down some on the amount of people who are buying it just to sell it.

I wish we had just paid more attention from the beginning and pre-ordered it.

games, woes, angry
