We carried on with the Henry VIII theme on Tuesday, visiting his castles at Portland
which is in a really good state of repair, and has nice gardens, and Sandfoot, which is kind of falling into the sea, so there's not much to go round but the views from it are good.
As we were already on Portland Bill, we went down to the southern tip, to the lighthouse, as there are tours to climb it (not for the unfit; it's a lot of stairs)
From Portland we went further west, hoping to get to
Eggardon Hillfort but never figuring out where to park in the tiny, tiny lanes, so we gave up and carried on to Charmouth for the evening.
Having had a really busy Tuesday, we had a lazy Wednesday staying on or near the Isle of Purbeck: the Old Harry rocks
the incredible carved stone globe at
Durlston Country Park
then, the furthest away we got was the brilliantly named Manowar Cove, by Durdle Door.
Coming back towards Swanage, we walked round Wareham's Saxon era 'walls', huge earthworks to protect the town which actually now make a nice evening stroll.
