Linz

The first Monday we were in Austria, the guest house staff were saying, 'Don't ski today, it's going to be more sleet than snow and conditions will be horrible.' So we went to Linz

Linz seems to be most famous for having been the home of Kepler; his house still stands but unfortunately it's not open to the public. However, astronomy continues as a big theme in Linz town and university, so we followed the Planetenweg (planet path - where the planets are shown in scale distance to each other) through a pretty, but rather soggy park with a small observatory.

Next stop, just by the walls of the medieval city, was Martinskirche, the oldest church in Austria, built in the 7th C on the remains of Roman buildings - and utilising various Roman gravestones or milestones simply as building blocks. This is the 'volo santo' painting

We were running out of time to do much more before we needed to get a train back to Zell, but we took a quick trip up the nearby Pöstlingberg on the historic tram

It's a pity we didn't get there earlier in the day, because the views were good (but digital cameras don't like dusk), and it would have been nice to see more of the park . . . oh well, there's always something where you wanted to have longer.
