Just got to this Elsie passage. Still, just blinking at it. Captain Raymond quotes a bit from the Bible, then comments, "Verily I believe that we of the Anglo-Saxon nations are the literal descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God's own chosen people, so that we have the strongest claim to these precious promises; but let us never forget that they are ours only as we fulfil the prescribed conditions; without true repentance and true faith we shall no more be saved than those of other nations who do not seek the Lord while he may be found and call upon him while he is near."

Anglo-Saxon nations? Really? Because a few books ago, the true heirs were the Waldensians, who are French and Italian.

Was this a common belief back then? (We're in the 1890s still.) I think it's the "literal" there that's making me blink the most. Spiritual or intellectual or something, I can see how someone could make that argument, but literal descendants?
