Scheming is Stupid

Nov 16, 2010 22:38

Communication devices are nothing but trouble.

The cast of our little play:

KELENTH MONTAGUE: thick-skulled, protective father figure.
AEROVIA SOON-TO-BE-MONTAGUE: they're engaged. she was pretty quiet.
LUE?: adopted kid. Little older than Ish, gets into as much trouble, looks like.
MAEDRYN:
hi, I'm made of crazy manipulation, stupid plots, and STALKING

I WATCH YOU IN YOUR SLEEP

She's been out of the picture for a while. Don't know what happened to her. I could handle it when she was just nuts, even with the boundary issues, but somewhere along the line she regained enough sense to pick up scheming again. Another would-be puppet master. Pulling her shit again.

TYRADRE: crazy ladywith a destroyed lab who apparently does not like Maedryn.

TYRADRE'S ANNOYING PIECE OF ASS: Some fancy-talking creep with an imp.

Seems the Montague clan helped Mae with something (ten index fingers, 'to point the way', what the fuck) and came under the radar of Tyradre for it. Apparently Maedryn detroyed her lab earlier, and now anyone helping her is a threat or something.

Lue threatened her remaining research equipment to try to get her to back off bothering them. Made it worse.

And she called me, asking for help finding Mae so she could find out where Tyradre's lab is and go storming up there. Talked her out of it after warding off Tyra's boy-toy, talked to Kelenth and Aerovia. None of them had any damn idea what was happening, apparently. I got them to agree to let me handle it.

We arranged a meeting through Tyradre's boy-toy, but at the last second she changed the location from Murder Row to Caer Darrow.

Caer-fucking-Darrow. Remember when Mae locked me and Shias in there. Something about learning to act like a Rogue, I still don't know what the hell it was supposed to prove. Anyway, turns out that's where the remains of the lab were. Not sure why she wanted to show them to me. Make a point, I guess.

Mae showed up. Of course she would. Tyradre kept firing spells off at her casual as could be while we were talking, like this is routine for them. We just kept talking over her.

Tyradre thinks the Montagues are a threat to her because of their involvement with Mae and Lue's stupidity, and wants them to stay away from her. Said if I could get them to stay out of sight and contact, the problem would be solved. Were trying to figure out how to ensure they stuck to their end of the deal, and

I was expecting a slightly less extreme threat, not sure why. If they break the deal and bother her any more, she'll kill me. Asked how she'd find me, hoping I could talk her down to something more reasonable, point out what's wrong with her plan, but instead she strides over, takes some of my hair, and says, guess what, now I can find you.

Meeting the Montagues tomorrow evenign to explain the situation. I have my ways to get out of this, but they don't need to know that. They need to think that if they cooperate, the whole thing goes away, and if they don't, I die. Simple enough choice to make.

Mae tracked me down outside the Undercity. Had the hair. Said it was a trade, but if she's lying and she stole it, Tyradre will come down on my head like a ton of bricks. All this hinges on them being convinced the threat is air-tight.

Mae keeps talking about how I'm working for her without realizing it. Hate that shit.

I should have taken the hair back from her. She can completely blow this deal if she wants to. But I don't think she will. Not in a way that will get me killed. She's nuts. She's nuts, but she's always had my back.

She has my back when I want her -away- from my back. I had a break. I think. Maybe I didn't. Maybe she never fucking left, maybe she's been following me the whole time.

(( *the writing switches to large-print Orcish* ))

You reading this, Mae?

Hi.

I still use your knives, Mae. I appreciate some of what you've done for me. SOME of it. But you don't know when to quit. Please know when to quit here, you're gonna get my friends killed.

You didn't explain what was selfish about this.

You know, I'd be willing to listen to you if you weren't constantly trying to manipulate everyone around you into participating in some vague master plan, right?

Don't suppose you want to come out and talk to me directly? Or at least as directly as you ever did? Because I could handle it when you were just nuts. You got something sinister about you now, but I could handle the nuts. You would go on about the strangest shit, go on about the Shadow, and you were a good teacher. You seemed like you were part of it, so I'd listen when you talked to it.

Now you have other motives. Can't trust a word you say.

You were a good teacher before you started with the plans, you know that? I got used to you lurking in my shadow, but now I know you've got a reason to, and no matter how much you might pretend to explain, I don't think I'll ever know.

Freaky, missing the old days. Once I got used to it, it was okay, but still not something I thought I'd miss. But I still use your knives.

We were doing okay before Jaithys, weren't we? Or did you start getting weird before that? I can hardly remember.

Thank you for giving the shard back to Shias. It meant a lot to him. I haven't forgotten that.

The final straw was the Plague outbreak. You could have just told me to evacuate. I would have gone. Holding me captive wasn't necessary. Once was, you would have told me a bunch of riddles, pissed me off, and eventually I would have gone.

But no. Paralyzed on the rotting floor of a run-down, abandoned shack. That's how it had to go.

I'd say let's talk sometime, but your riddles have a motive now. You want something from everyone. Used to be, you'd talk in riddles and teach me how to slip through the shadows a little easier, teach me how to drive a knife home without hesitating.

I don't know if I want to thank you for that second one.

But now, you're planning something, you're pulling a lot of strings, and you want something, don't you?

Otherwise, why would you show up and start talking about how I'm playing into your plans? Did you used to have plans to play into?

But you were a good tea

fuck

Fuck, I told Shias I was going fishing when I went to meet Tyradre.

I have to go. It's been hours longer than I planned. I gotta catch some fish.

Don't suppose you want to help me with that?

No?

I'm going to go fishing.

Please don't blow this deal, Mae.
