Sorry for the long absence! Work, real life, etc etc (at least this means more recs for y'all?). I currently have about 15 mosquito bites and 3-4 welts/bruises, courtesy of my first foray into organized pseudo-violence paintball this past weekend. :) The battle wounds were well worth it; I had so much fun. :)
So! Things, lots of things, all of them good. :D
1) I bought an iPhone last night. \o/ Actually, I bought two, one for me, one for sis. I am still kind of in aksdjflkajdsf shock because a) I was planning to get a 4 and now I have a 4S, and b) I've never had a smart phone and ajsdkfjda I don't know what to do with this thing, it has so many features, and it has so many settings. Haven't had much time to fiddle with it yet, but soon, there will be apps and hopefully better ring tones etc etc. Any suggestions, darlings? :)
2) And just to add to the awesome, look what came in the mail last week!!
I love it! It's beautiful!!! :DD It's like
this awesome Politics!AU come to life. *______*
3) Fandom stuff: Inception friends, there is a new Inception hangout,
uncafe.notquiteroyal.net! EXCITING!!
And new comms
avengersgen and
aaron_marta.
4) TV ramblings: I was able to watch the pilot of Elementary, and while there are some weaknesses, see
cobweb_diamond's awesome
review, overall, I was pretty happy. :) I love Joan Watson and I really enjoyed the Holmes+Watson dynamic. Look at
this awesomeness!
5) Movie stuff Part A) The
trailer for JRENNER's next movie,
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters! It looks like Van Helsing met Blade Trinity and tripped over Immortals for good measure (aka TERRIBLE). :p But. JRENNER + guns. OK, Hollywood, I am sold. NO SHAME HERE. <3
Part B) I rewatched Date Night and my Post Avengers brain (I totally measure everything this way, BA, Before Avengers, PA, Post Avengers) noticed two new things: 1) Taraji P. Henson's cop partner reminds me an awful lot of Agent Coulson (looks, mannerisms, The Suit), and 2) unshaven Bruce Banner Mark Ruffalo, looking deliciously rumpled.
Part C) I got to watch Lawless! I thought it was fairly enjoyable and entertaining and found the entire movie really funny.
Things that weren't so great included everything LeBeef (MANPAIN OMG), underutilization of Jason Clarke (although I kind of loved the one scene where he just charges in like an unstoppable force and beats up the LEOs), and the somewhat awkward transitions between different parts of the narrative. The main issue I had though was how I felt like it see-sawed back and forth between lukewarm This is a Movie About Family and violent This is a Movie About Sticking It to the Corrupt Man (subtitle: we just want to help you get drunk and make money!). I didn't actually feel like the connection between the brothers was all that strong; this is partly because Jason Clarke barely gets to do anything, and LeBeef is usually off by himself doing dumb things, so that sense of this is my family and you do not mess with my family sort of chemistry wasn't really present. What the movie did well was keeping things intense; I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, wondering what would happen next. I enjoyed the humor and I loved FORREST and his grunts. As an aside, I also thought this definitely could fuel a new drinking game: take a shot every time LeBeef's character gets someone punched/stabbed/killed/harmed, including himself.
6)
Fantastic news: the new Uncanny X-Force team will be led by Psylocke, and will include Storm, Puck, and Spiral (thanks for the heads up, Sam!!). AMAZING. :DDD
latenightcuppa and I are crazy excited!!
7) Tumblr bounty: Someone please write this
Suits spy thriller AU! This
adorable bobblehead drama is hilarious! Can't stop giggling. :) And
this stop the presses, hold everything, I need to flail my hands in the air and make gasping seal noises for a bit gorgeous Avengers as angels art. *____________________________*
8) Recs:
a)
In all the tongues of men and angels by coinin (The Losers, Cougar/Jensen) - In which Cougar goes home, goes on a road trip, and learns to cook. This is sweet and lovely and full of feels. <3
b)
Ten dollar rock stars by pistol (The Losers, Cougar/Jensen) - The Losers start out the same way so many other garage bands do - after school when there's nothing good on TV. I love everything about this. Everything. *___________*
c)
Of twin stars and other eccentric satellites by winterhill (Star Trek, Kirk/Spock) - A year into the mission, Spock and Jim have got on with things and are well on their way to that great destined friendship -- or maybe more. There’s spanner in the works, though, when a group of colonists exploring an unknown part of New Vulcan go missing, and the Enterprise crew is called in to help. The problem? The Vulcan High Council has insisted they take a guide - Spock’s wife, T’Pring. So. Good. :)
d)
Why do we fall by
pen_rabbit (TDKR/Inception, gen) - The Dark Knight Rises: an Inception origins story. They call him Smallest at first, because that's what he is. Rabbit's writing is lyrical and hypnotic, totally drawing you in; this fusion is so seamless, so natural. Definitely worth reading.
e)
Nothing suits Tony Stark like an Iron Suit by hud1313 - An amazing fanvid, a meld of How I Met Your Mother and Avengers. HIMYM knowledge not required (I've never watched the show); this vid is hilarious and entertaining and all around wonderful.
f)
I'm gonna be a part of it (whether I want to or not) by fringedweller (Avengers, Bruce/Darcy) - Relocated against her will to New York, Darcy Lewis has to juggle working as an admin monkey for SHIELD, covertly finishing her degree and falling in love. Only one of these things is easy, and it's not the one that she thinks it will be. This is Darcy learning how to grow into herself, a really realistic take on what might happen to her post-Thor. Seriously amazing and long enough that her journey feels fully developed in a very satisfying way.
g)
Alliterative domiciles series by vera_dragonmuse (Avengers, Bruce/Pepper/Tony, Clint/Natasha, Bucky/Steve) - As you can infer from the title, unapologetic domestic fic; basically, the story of the Avengers learning to fit into each others' spaces. I loved the characterizations in this series, particularly the way the author handled the complex relationship between Clint and Natasha.
h)
Who will find you in the middle of your breath? by prettyasadiagram (Avengers, Clint/Coulson) - In which Natasha saves Clint from a broken nose, hipster speed dating is thing, and a fern does not determine Clint's relationship, thank you very much. Hilarious AU filled with feels.
i)
Bringing hell in a dress by thegirlthatisclumsy (Avengers, Clint/Coulson) - In 1977, Jennifer Barton (nee Clinton) gave birth to her second child. Francis Clinton Barton was born and her father threw away the It's A Boy cigars and walked out of the delivery room to head to the closest bar. Ugh, I don't even have words to describe how great this fic was. Highly recommended.
j)
Follow you into the dark by misachan (Avengers, Clint/Coulson, Clint/Coulson/Natasha) - On a cold, windy night Clint Barton goes to a crossroad to wipe some red from his ledger. omg this was so intense (warning for torture) but so good. I don't know jack about Crowley, btw, so I can't speak for any borrowed crossover elements, but I did like the blending of the various Hell stories, especially the portrayal of Hela. Creative and interesting and FEELS.
k)
argumentum ad ignorantiam by
lanyon (Avengers, Clint/Coulson, Bucky/Steve) - Clint Barton excels at loss. Childhood, parents, dignity, virginity, his brother, peace of mind, his brother again, free will and Phil Coulson. This fic is everything I want from a C/C fic.
lanyon's dialogue, word choice, everything, is so perfect. <3
l)
Aripâ by
foxxcub (Avengers, Clint/Coulson, NC17) - "I wish I could fly," he whispers. I doubt I need to sell most people on my flist on anything Aleesha writes, but on the extremely low off chance that you haven't already read/seen/bookmarked this, I'm reccing it anyway because it deserves to be recced. This is just...gorgeous. Also, wing!fic (not-so-secret Kryptonite)!
m)
How Clint learned to stop worrying and love Nancy Drew by
boosette (Avengers, gen) - Clint Barton has an ongoing and complex relationship with libraries, used bookstores, and that one box of his mom's romance novels he found in the coat closet when he was five. Great gen!fic, and y'know, BOOKS and LIBRARIES. You know how I feel about that.
This week has made me so happy. :) Flailing, ridorkulous JRENNER thanks you for your time. ♥
