Christmas update:
♥ I had a nice quiet holiday, nothing flashy, spent with my family. Good food, great company, couldn't ask for more. Also, bonus!snow! =)
♥
ilovetakahana, your postcard arrived yesterday and now I'm all warm and fuzzy inside. Thank you so much, dear!
♥ Gifts from my wonderful family: a nook (oh my goodness, I'm so excited!!! I haven't opened it yet because as I've previously noted I am a dork have this thing about delayed gratification. What should I read first??), the Firefly DVD set, the Girl Who Played with Fire, perfume
♥ Epic present from my sister: a build-a-bear teddy. Why this is special: When I was 5, I had a sinus infection and the doctor told me if I didn't want permanent sinusitis, I couldn't sleep or play with stuffed animals. Ever. Woe. So I never really had stuffed toys. Fast forward to three years ago. My ex found out I'd never had a teddy bear and he bought me the cuddliest, cutest bear in the world. Sadly, my mom and sis hate my poor Teddy because that particular ex turned out to be a jerkface of planet-sized proportions. I love this bear despite all that and I like to hug him when I have a bad day (as you do). He's currently hidden in my closet despite various schemes to convince me to donate him. My sis has always made fun of Build-a-bear because my first ex-bf (not to be confused with jerkface!ex; I have an unfortunate dating history) gave me a build-a-dog named Wolverine. Wolverine was harder than stone. He was neither cute nor cuddly. The ex was really annoyed that I liked the X-Men comic he gave me better than poor Wolverine. It was not a great moment. Thus it's become tradition that when we go to the mall, sis and I mock Build-a-bear because of that incident. So in conclusion: my sis loves me so much that she A) put aside her hatred of Build-a-bear and made me a cuddly, super soft, adorable teddy, and B) is still trying to help me wash away bad memories of jerkface!ex. This is why she is the best thing on the planet. I can't really share this story in RL for various reasons but I wanted someone to know how awesome my sis is so if you read all of that, thank you! ♥
Quick rec:
Still Heartbroken (After all these years) by
jeannedecarnin This is a gorgeous backstory and I love everything about it. (Arthur/Eames, NC17).
Yuletide recs:
It's a really slow week since most of the office is on vacation which equals lots of fic-reading time. Here are a few I've enjoyed.
♥
The Princess is in Another Castle - H50, Gen, PG - Kono and Danny go on an epic quest to rescue Steve. You know you want to read a fic that references goombas. ;)
♥
Lokahi - H50, Danny/Kono, R - Danny and Kono go undercover at a couples resort. Hilarious and sexy.
♥
Christopher's Dilemma - Chrestomanci books, Christopher/Millie, G - Christopher, Millie, and Conrad are starting to grow up. I adore the Chrestomanci novels and this fic really captured Diana Wynne Jones' style.
♥
Working Title - Brick, Gen, PG - Wow. Just...wow. It's really difficult to write convincing Brick-lingo but this fic nails it. The characters are wonderfully fleshed out and the story revolves around Kara (who's always fascinated and repulsed me in equal measures). Seriously, if you loved the movie (like me) you'll want to read this.
♥
Lieutenant Bennet's Visit - Pride and Prejudice, Gen, PG - A fantastic crossover in which Elizabeth rides a dragon. This works so well and I wanted it to be a million words longer.
New Year's plans: My lovely friend W is turning 21 on Friday so in addition to ringing in the New Year, she's going to try every new drink our friends can whip up. Her side goal is to get me drunk but since I've never drank enough to get tipsy, we'll see how well she succeeds. XD
Reflections on 2010: 1) No one saw Inception coming. 2) Thank you, Inception and Chris Nolan, for sucking me into fandom. I've met the most amazing people and I love you all. ♥ 3) I'd never written fic before and never realized how much fun it is. So anything I wrote, no matter how awful, was surprising and I'm incredibly grateful. Here's hoping if I continue, that it will be less craptastic.
