I know what you're getting at, but still, fair play to Nicholson. It's a thousand decibels understated to say they were making a totally different kind of movie.
Anywho, I have one big problem with Ledger's performance. I had to hide from a lot of it! (a.k.a. Bravo indeed, RIP.)
True, Tim Burton was doing a very different thing with Batman and what he did, he did extremely well. But I much prefer this version, all told. Apparently I like my Batman dark, brooding, and tormented. Who knew?

That was what spawned my comment, actually. I didn't find Nicholson's Joker particularly frightening (which is saying something, considering how much he unnerves me in general), but Ledger's was frankly terrifying. Though what I really loved was that they made him so scary by showing so very little -- my imagination took care of the rest!

That was what spawned my comment, actually.
