It's not required that you be sparkly. Interesting, yes, but not sparkly. The qualities you describe are (a) entirely truthful, (b) perfectly suited to doctoral work, and (c) more lacking than you might think in graduate students (*cough* myself *cough*). Sure, you'll want to present yourself in the best light possible, but don't forget that what you've got going is in no way negligible.
Don't forget to mention PanOp, Mastersingers, and whatever arts stuff you've done at Cambridge. Well-roundedness, woot.

I know the personal statement thing sucks. Having just finished two of them. But Mike's right. You're not going for President or Beauty Queen, you're going for Piled Higher and Deeper, and in literature, no less. Remember to hit them with your latest publication, and also recall that rec lettres are going make an impression, too.
