It's sometimes quite amusing when you read back your last entry to see where to pick up. It seems I was expecting this week to be a lull between two busy weeks. Not so much...
The aforementioned Queer Alternative cabaret was an excellent night, with lots of very good acts and only two ropey ones (which shall remain nameless) lower down the bill.
Professor Elemental did his usual steampunky rap weirdness at the top of the bill, closely supported by
The Dykeness, who are truly something else. The standout act, for me, though, was
Laurence Owen, whose two-song set comprised a song about how people ought to be more inventive in their Halloween costumes and another about the limited life choices for female characters in Disney films. That one damn near brought the house down, for reasons which will become clear if you buy it for a mere shiny pound from Bandcamp,
here. (I bought the whole album on CD, and it's pretty good, but he definitely picked the right two songs for his set).
I then had a very busy week with lots of prep for various meetings I'll be clerking over the next two weeks, plus one meeting during this week, for which I really ought to start on the minutes pretty soon. ;)
And then, on Friday night,
nezumi_sama and I went to the gig to which he won tickets at the QA event. We'd seen
The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing before, and knew that they claim to be 'putting the punk back into steampunk', and I had gotten the impression that the support bands were going to be actual punk. So I was rather surprised when the main support,
The Cesarians, turned out to be the kind of group who would fit in quite nicely on Later With Jools Holland (In a good way. The singer put me in mind of mid-period Nick Cave.) TMTWNBBFN themselves were on fine, shouty form and I was pleased to discover that I had chosen exactly the right place to stand to be able to stare at their guitarist, who is a glorious sight to behold. :)
In other news, although not news to most people on my f-list who still read LJ, I somehow ended up being a forum moderator. Standing seemed like a good idea when it looked like they were going to have too few candidates to even fill the vacancies and, by the time there were loads, I figure it it would look crap to withdraw. So now I'm having a bit of a panic about whether I'm going to cope with the tech side of it all (there are various separate accounts that will have to be juggled, to deal with anonymous posting etc). Hopefully the induction process, whenever it actually starts, will make things a little bit clearer.
Anyway, better go: I have a ridiculous amount of stuff I ought to be doing, again...
