I read that the lyricist Hal David died at the weekend. Now, there was a life worth celebrating.
No, I'm not being even slightly ironic. As a proto-goth in my tweens and teens, pop songs were the first songs of heartbreak I ever heard. Seriously, check out the lyrics for 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' if you don't believe me.
Anyway, I had a look at the liner notes of my 'Burt Bacharach Songbook' CD to remind myself of some of the best ones they wrote together, and I remembered the Bomb the Bass version of 'I Say a Little Prayer' which, personally, I think is better than either the Dionne Warwick or Aretha Franklin versions - although, granted, this is biased by the fact that this was the version I first heard and owned.
