Remember, remember the fifth of November,The gunpowder, treason and plot,I know of no reasonWhy gunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot.
Ed wants to burn something in effigy, but maybe I can convince him to do something british that doesn't involve potentially setting our house on fire...

Florida mostly sucks, but you'll miss Cuban food if you move away! ;)

hehe! I know! Thats why I'm on a quest to learn how to cook everything my grandmother has made for me ever...so when I do manage to move, I can hopefully recreate my own Cuban food ;-).

Yay! Although I haven't a drop of cuban blood, I was born and raised in Miami (and known as La Americana to my friend's parents), and made sure I learned to cook it when I left. I'm pretty darned good, and have found that no matter where you are, there is some funky little store that sells plantains.

I did, however, have my mom ship me a little shaker of adobo and bijol.

I've made Cuban dinners a couple times now for my Scottish/Irish/English friends, and they are amazed, they've never had anything like it. Oh, and my boyfriend and I did find a rather good and somewhat authentic Cuban restaurant in London. It was funny to me though because there were pictures of Castro everywhere - can you imagine that in Miami?! ;)

omg! that place would be burned *down* in miami!

but yay for the prospect of *some* cuban food in london! i wonder how they get their frijoles negros? i've not yet been able to find any in the grocery stores in England/Ireland...although perhaps you can get the dried beans at some more upmarket places than i've been.

Actually, I've already sussed this out. Tesco sells them in their little organic food section. You can also find them in health food stores. Tesco also carries plantains, although their stock is limited. I was only able to pick up two last time. However, there is a little store here called "Afrika", which is an afro-carribean shop that caters mostly to the "Asian" community. They always have tons of plantains plus other things you'd find in a carribean grocery, including scotch bonnet (and other) chilies, and cassava/yuca!

Not sure if you'd find a place like that in Ireland, maybe in Dublin.
