I've been thinking about Hyde's voice change since the 20th L'anniversary and I have theories. I want to know what you guys think of them.
1. Hyde said around the time of the 20th L'anniversary that he has started enjoying singing again. I was thinking maybe now he tries to put more effort and emotion into songs instead of just phoning in the deep voice he used for about 3 or 4 years. Maybe he’s trying to mix things up now and sing differently for each song.
2. His voice seems to be similar to how a lot of L’arc’s songs were sung in their early years. Perhaps revisiting those early songs for the 20th L’anniversary inspired Hyde to sing in that style again, or while trying to recapture that style he subconsciously changed his voice in general.
3. Vamps to Hyde is maybe the antithesis to L’arc. Thus he may have associated his old singing style with the more harsh rock of Vamps and decided to promote a completely different voice and image with L’arc. This is reflected in his clothing and behaviour, but perhaps also in his
new singing style.
4. Around the time of the 20th L’anniversary he stopped smoking. I don’t know if this had a major effect on his voice but I think that it must have affected how he sings in some ways. As I’ve never smoked I can’t say for sure.
5. I hate to say this but his voice may have weakened, but I don’t mean it’s completely gone. By weakened I mean he may have to limit how he sings to maintain his voice for an entire performance. An example is that Link is now entirely sung in his new singing style, Ready Steady Go is mostly his old deep voice mixed in with his style, and Seventh Heaven is pretty much sung like it sounds on the album. This may be a conscious choice by Hyde to keep his voice while also retaining some of the style of his deeper voiced songs. Perhaps his now common voice break is a way to avoid using so much power for certain notes and even to avoid messing it up.
6. He has not managed to master his voice his yet. I think while Hyde has not sung with some of the power he used to, his pitch has definitely improved and he is less prone to mistakes. While his voice breaks do go out of control sometimes, perhaps he has not managed to perfect pitch and accuracy in conjunction with pure power. You never know, this could just be a huge experiment. If you look at his singing from 2003 he seems to be losing his voice, but by 2005 it was at full strength and he had just taken a while to get used to a new style. This could be happening again.
So what points do you agree with and what other theories do you have?
