part 8 She came along picking on my scabs and making me think about all the things I really, really wanted to forget. And then she dragged along for the ride the one person that I had no desire to see ever again. It wasn't his fault exactly that I had lost the woman I loved but he had a big part in how things turned out to be.
Half an hour later, he arrived at my doorstep. I opened the door and there he was, tall, blond and with his stupid grey eyes. What did she saw in him?
"Dresden." He said coldly.
"Kincaid." I said just as coldly.
"Where's the midget?"
"With Mister, come on in." He did.
"I'm not a midget! I grew up a lot this past months." She said frowning.
"Whatever. Don't do this again. You scared Joana. Will we be writing notes all the time to communicate now?" He asked, frowning himself.
"Oh, that how you knew he was looking for you?" I asked to Ivy.
"Yes." She answered me, then turned to Kincaid. "And no, I rather not, you have bad grammar."
"I'm hired to protect you, I can't do that if you run away like that."
"You were busy, I was bored. And I'm your boss, not the other way around."
"You're growing up sassy."
"You're growing old." He rolled his eyes. As if the whole discussion didn't matter 'cause they did this all the time.
"Joana waits in the car. I need to talk to Dresden for a moment."
She huffed. "Fine. Goodbye, Harry. And thank you for your hospitality."
"Anytime, Ivy." I said and smiled at her. She smiled back and went to the car. Kincaid watched her from the door.
"She's in that age." He said with a shrug.
"I heard... Congratulations." I said, and couldn't help to grimace a little.
"Thanks, I guess." He said, frowning. That's a weird way of wording the joy of a child.
"So... What do you wanna talk about?" I asked.
"Karrin."
"Oh. How is she?"
"Not ok." That got me worried.
"What do you mean?"
"She's... too tired most of the time, sick, weak. Dresden... I need to ask you a favor."
"Ok." I said, slowly. "Tell me."
He sighed. "I'm not human."
"I know." Because I had seen him with my sight before, he was monster.
He nodded. "And I don't know if the child will be... She went to every doctor appointment, everything is fine according to them, they chalked whatever synthoms she's had to... fuck, her not being so young anymore."
"But you don't think the same."
"No, I know better. I think the child might a creature like me. Different. My kind is dangerous, Dresden. We look like human, and while we are inside our mothers we suck the life out of them. The women often live just long enough to give birth. It usually starts like Karrin, week or feeling sick, until the day when they had to push us out. It's started late in her, but...
There's been ocations... when the child does not do it, because he's more human. The mother has a normal pregnancy. But then, he's the one that... When I was born, my mother died. Her other son before me on the other hand, died as soon as he was out of her womb. It usually is one or the other."
"But she's been feeling sick... and you think..."
"It's gonna be her."
